Keyano College, in partnership with MacEwan University, is offering the Management & Supervision Certificate program.

The courses in this certificate program are approved for 56 hours of the required 150 hours in one of more of the 18 approved subject areas towards the Achievement in Business Competencies (Blue Seal) program, through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.

Managers and supervisors play a pivotal role in any organization’s growth and success.  Develop and enhance your ability to engage your team, make decisions, problem solve, handle conflict and communicate with purpose.  Discover new and practical strategies you can adopt immediately to effectively supervise and manage others within an evolving workplace. Walk away with a greater capacity to contribute to your organization’s success, as well as your own.  

The Management and Supervision Certificate will teach you how to:

  • identify the competencies, skills and attributes you need to be successful in your role
  • create an environment that empowers and inspires employees to succeed
  • apply critical thinking strategies to problem-solve, make decisions and manage priorities
  • communicate effectively and manage difficult issues and conflict in the workplace
  • improve team morale, engagement and performance

Admission Requirements

Students must be 18 years of age or older to enroll in Keyano College Continuing Education courses.

There is no admission requirement/application process to start a non-credit certificate program.

Program Structure

Delivery Format: HyFlex.

All course materials will be posted on the Keyano Learning Management System (iLearn.keyano.ca) before a course start.

  • Students use their Keyano student credentials to access their accounts.
  • Please email registrar@keyano.ca or call 780-791-4801 if you don’t know your credential.

This program can be completed in one year, depending on course availability. 

A minimum of 80% attendance required in all courses

Courses

This certificate consists of seven courses (six required courses and one elective), seven hours each in length, for a total of 49 instructional hours.  Courses may be completed individually, or complete the six required courses plus one elective to achieve your Management and Supervision professional development certificate.  

Fundamentals of Management and Supervision (CESUPR100)

7 hours, $379 

Managers and supervisors play a pivotal role in an organization and require unique skills to motivate and lead their teams. Explore the mindset and behaviors of an effective manager and how to successfully handle the challenges of supervising in today’s business environment. Learn principles and strategies to enhance your supervisory and team building skills in a manner that will lead to improved team performance, morale, engagement and goal achievement.

Building an Engaged Workforce (CESUPR101)

7 hours, $379

Leading others requires understanding each team member as an individual with unique skills, abilities and needs. Bringing people together in a cohesive team to accomplish organizational goals requires understanding diversity and team dynamics, as well as how to deal with conflict proactively so that a safe, productive and healthy work environment can be created for all. You will leave equipped with practical strategies for building and leading strong, productive and more successful teams.

Managing Priorities and Making Decisions (CESUPR102)

7 hours, $379 

Balancing the needs and demands of a team with those of the organization can be challenging. Learn how to use critical thinking skills to problem-solve and make decisions. Explore techniques and strategies to improve your own productivity and ability to adapt to changing priorities and keep yourself and your team on track. Discover how to delegate and assign tasks effectively, run effective meetings, reduce time wasters and manage the email jungle. 

Effective Communication Techniques (CESUPR103)

7 hours, $379 

Strong communication skills are essential for managers and supervisors to be effective. Learn to communicate and present information more confidently and persuasively. By exploring common barriers to communication and understanding your own communication style, you can affect how your message is received by others. Discover simple, but profound strategies you can use to strengthen and add impact to your written and verbal communications. 

Managing Workplace Conflict (CESUPR104)

7 hours, $379 

If your role involves leading others, you will likely have times where conflict threatens to derail working relationships, team productivity and the work environment. But when handled constructively, conflict can also be a catalyst for change and growth. Learn about the different types of workplace conflict and its effects on individuals and the organization. Identify your own conflict style and that of others, explore the problem-solving process, and discover practical strategies and tools that will increase your confidence and skill in resolving conflicts in a constructive manner. 

Coaching for Performance (CESUPR105)

7 hours, $379 

Enhance your ability to develop and manage the performance of your team. Learn how to work with your employees to define roles, set expectations and goals and measure results. Acquire practical skills and techniques on how to coach, give and receive feedback, cope with failure and success, and motivate employees. The importance of providing meaningful recognition in building a productive work environment will also be covered. 

Elective: Strategies for Managing Projects (CESUPR200)

7 hours, $379 

The day-to-day work in organizations today is often project based. Whether this involves launching new products or services, changing business processes or moving offices, chances are that every manager and supervisor will have a role to play in ensuring successful project completion. In this practical, hands-on course, you will learn the basics of managing projects throughout the various phases: conceptualization, planning, execution and review. 

Elective: Hiring for Success (CESUPR201)

7 hours, $379 

Ensure you make the right hiring decision. Learn how to prepare a job analysis and position profile, create better job advertisements and develop a fair and consistent interview process for selecting employees. Interviewing is both an art and a science. Gain an understanding of the different types of interview questions and techniques that elicit specific, behavior-based examples of past performance.

Instructor Biography

David Vlajic

David Vlajic holds a Master of Business Administration and Project Management Professional (PMP) designation. Currently David is employed with NOVA chemicals as a Manager for Maintenance Center of Excellence. Prior to NOVA David has been employed with Syncrude Canada for 15 years i n various Leadership, Project and Turnaround Management positions. Throughout his Project and Turnaround career, he has been responsible for project budgets ranging from $100K to $250MM. David recognizes that PMI Project Management methodology has proven invaluable throughout his numerous projects from inception to closure. Although David recognizes such benefits, this is eclipsed by his awareness of Risk Management during the project life cycle given any unforeseen incident can prove disastrous to the project outcome. When David is not in the office, he enjoys golfing in the summer months and skiing in the winter.

Damjana Vlajic 
Damjana joined Keyano College Continuous Education in 2020. Damjana has over 13 years of experience in the field of Human Resources, including Recruitment, Employee Relations, Talent Development and Leadership Training. Damjana has completed her Bachelors Degree in Management-Labour Relations and Human Resources, MBA ,and is a CHRP member. Damjana is passionate about continuous learning and sharing her personal and professional  experience.  Her teaching style focuses on story telling and student engagement.
Roger Davies

Following an education in Computer Technology, Roger joined the Electrical Engineering department at The Steel Company of Canada, (now U.S. Steel) where he worked with the engineering and maintenance personnel in various production mills.

This experience led him into the second phase of his career of implementing computer-based process control systems for asset-intensive industries across North America. This focus was on SCADA, DCS and process instrumentation applications for heavy industry. This activity resulted in constant contact with many companies for over 35 years.

Throughout his career, constant exposure to industrial maintenance paved the way for a natural evolution into becoming a specialist in best business practices and associated software tools. After working for a few companies that developed and implemented computerized maintenance management systems, (CMMS), Roger formed his own corporation, The Da-trol Group Inc. in 1987.  Da-trol’s value added services all relate to optimizing company’s operations whether through policies and procedures, software tools or consulting.

For almost 20 years, Roger has been instructing courses through several Colleges in Ontario and Alberta. He also develops curriculum to satisfy the specific needs of individual industrial companies.  One fundamental value that he has learned is the importance of communication.   He often states that “Communication is the glue that holds everything together.  With it, businesses succeed; without it they fail”.

Tim Dyck

Tim Dyck is the Owner of Best Culture Solutions, Inc. in Fort McMurray.

He helps employers have the right talent in place with recruiting, Human Resources, and career transition services. He also helps job seekers find a fulfilling career with resume writing and interview coaching services.

He was recognized as the 2018 recipient of the Bowie Sustainable Leadership Award for building leadership capacity in a 5000-person organization.

Tim holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Calgary and is a proud Disney Alumni who is passionate about customer service.

Dwayne Vigilance

Dwayne Vigilance has worked at Keyano for 12 years as a trainer, coach and educational consultant. Dwayne has built a great team culture at Keyano College, where they have won over 100 games and qualified for two CCAA national championships as the women’s basketball coach.

Dwayne is proud of changing many lives. He is always encouraged others to be their best. Dwayne defines leadership as inspiring and guiding a team or person to fulfil a job or tasks they believe are achievable. Leaders motivate followers to succeed. Leaders need knowledge and skills.

Canada-Alberta Job Grant 

The Canada-Alberta Job Grant provides funding to Alberta business to help hire and train employees. You can receive up to $10,000 per employee per year for skills training.
