Are you an internationally educated nurse eager to practice in Canada? A former registered nurse looking to refresh your skills? Or simply someone wanting to elevate your nursing knowledge? Look no further! Our flexible Bridge to Canadian Nursing program is designed for you.
Bridge to Canadian Nursing is a one-year certificate program that prepares you to meet entry-level competencies for Canadian Registered Nursing (RN) practice and currency of practice.
The Bridge to Canadian Nursing Program is specifically designed for previously registered nurses who have been away from practice and are looking to re-enter or refresh on contemporary practices and those who require more extensive learning to support their transition to Canadian nursing practice.
The Bridge to Canadian Nursing program equips students to confidently practice as Canadian Registered Nurses (RNs). It offers customized courses that cater to individual learning needs. Students engage in hands-on labs, simulations, and clinical experiences which enhance their critical thinking and clinical judgment. Additionally, the program allows students to explore the latest trends and challenges facing the Canadian nursing workforce. Through this comprehensive approach, they gain the essential knowledge and skills necessary to provide competent, safe, and ethical nursing care. Graduates leave the program well-prepared to meet the demands of the healthcare sector in Canada.
Upon successful completion of the entire program, learners will be awarded a Program Certificate of Completion.

Educational Requirement |
Successful completion of nursing education in English outside of Canada. English must be recognized as the official/primary language of the instruction.

Heart & Stroke Basic Life Support Provider |
The student must complete the Heart and Stroke Basic Life Support – Health Care Provider course and submit a copy of your completed certificate to nursing@keyano.ca. This is a mandatory requirement to be able to attend clinical experiences. Only Heart & Stroke Provider BLS will be accepted. |
Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check |
All students are required to provide a clear Police Information Check which must include a Vulnerable Sector Check.
The Police Information Check must be dated no earlier than three (3) months from program start date.
The associated costs are at the student’s expense.
The original Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector must be submitted in person to the School of Health and Human Services. Please take a photocopy, or scan a copy, for yourself prior to submitting the original to the School of Health and Human Services. |

Program Structure
The IENRN program is an individualized program of study which provides a suite of courses delivered in a flexible format allowing the IENs to take specific courses or the full program depending on their requirements from the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or workplace.
The Bridge to Canadian Nursing Program is designed so that you can take individual courses or the entire program.
CEIERN 100: Fundamentals of Medical and Surgical Nursing |
Delivery: Blended Prerequisites: None This course will provide students with concepts aimed to create an appropriate understanding, synthesis, and integration of relevant knowledge into Canadian healthcare practices and interventions related to common medical/surgical conditions. It adheres to the clinical practice guidelines and standards of practice for healthcare professionals to ensure that students can competently apply the related concepts in clinical settings. Through this course, students will advance their knowledge in providing safe, effective, and patient-centered care, while also strengthening their critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills. This course will provide preparation for advanced medical and surgical nursing interventions relating to evidence-informed practice and patient safety standards. |
CEIERN 101: Next Generation NCLEX Prep (Optional) |
Delivery: Blended Prerequisites: None The NG-NCLEX Preparation Course for Domestic and Internationally Educated Nurses provides a complete, all-in-one review of the information learners need to prepare to write the NG-NCLEX. The self-paced, online course includes helpful hints for writing the NCLEX and practice questions similar to what the learner will experience in the NCLEX exam. The online learning resource eBook is included in the price of tuition.

CEIERN 102: Maternity, Pediatric, and Public Health |
Delivery: Blended Prerequisites: CEIERN 100, 103, 104 and 109 This course provides students with knowledge and skills in maternity, pediatric, public health, and family-centered care in Canadian healthcare settings. Students will learn about reproductive health, maternal and neonatal care, pediatric developmental milestones, immunization schedules, and public health policies. The course also emphasizes the importance of family-centered care and effective communication with patients, colleagues, and healthcare teams across different contexts. Upon completion, nurses will be better equipped to provide compassionate, holistic care to women, children, and families. |
CEIERN 103: Foundational Pharmacology |
Delivery: Blended Prerequisites: None This pharmacology course builds on the foundational knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pathology, and microbiology to teach students the safe and effective administration of medications to patients. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of drug classifications, mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. They will also learn about the various routes of drug administration including oral, topical, intravenous, and intramuscular, and how to choose the appropriate route for a particular patient and medication. Additionally, the course will cover important topics such as drug interactions, adverse reactions, and contraindications. Students will also learn about the legal and ethical considerations surrounding medication administration including documentation, informed concern, and patient confidentiality. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of Canadian medications and be well equipped to provide safe and competent medication administration to patients. |
CEIERN 104: Essential Nursing Skills |
Delivery: In-Person Corequisites: CEIERN 100 and 103 This course is designed to gain proficiency and confidence in performing essential psychomotor skills required in nursing practice in Canada at an entry-to-practice level and includes hands-on training with mentors and educators. It covers skills such as patient assessment, wound care, infection control, medication administration, and surgical procedures. Students must also be proficient in using various medical equipment. The course also aims to equip students with the necessary tools to provide patient-centered care and effectively manage patient care plans. |
CEIERN 105: Cultural Competence and Indigenous Health |
Delivery: Blended Prerequisites: None This course aims at developing an understanding of self as a provider in the Canadian health professions context and in relation to Canada’s indigenous peoples. It explores the foundations of professional nursing, relational practice, and therapeutic communication skills necessary for interacting with patients, families, and health care team members. This course would cover topics such as understanding culture, cultural stereotypes, communication styles, non-verbal communication, effective listening, cultural differences in healthcare, and building cultural competence. This course includes topics such as the historical context of indigenous peoples in Canada, traditional cultural beliefs and practices, the impact of colonization on indigenous health, how to communicate respectfully with indigenous patients and families, understanding the role of elders in indigenous communities, and the importance of cultural safety in healthcare. This course focuses on cultural awareness by facilitating International Educated Nurses (IENs) to recognize and understand Canadian expectations of patient advocacy before identifying possible challenges and obstacles that could impede their ability to fulfill those expectations. The course promotes reflection on personal perspectives and experiences to understand one’s own attitudes, beliefs, and values so they can adapt and develop an understanding of Canadian values, and ethical considerations in communication. |
CEIERN 106: Jurisprudence and Ethics |
Delivery: Blended Prerequisites: None The course aims to provide IENs with an understanding of the jurisprudence related to nursing and its implications for nursing practice including the legal and ethical framework that regulates nursing practice in Canada. An overview of the Health Professions Act, registration requirements for IENs, the role of the regulatory bodies, professional obligations and standards, scope of practice, disciplinary processes, and expected conduct within the profession will be provided. The IEN will gain knowledge of how the Canadian healthcare system provides affordable and accessible healthcare services at all levels of delivery. The different levels of care including primary, secondary, and tertiary care will be described and the role of the multidisciplinary team as health care providers will be defined. The role of advocacy for individual and population health will be described by emphasizing the importance of preventative healthcare, identifying risk factors, promoting healthy lifestyles, and implementing evidence-based interventions for various health conditions. |
CEIERN 107: Clinical Skills Mastery |
Delivery: In-Person Prerequisites: None This course aims to provide students with practical skills necessary for clinical practice in healthcare settings. It focusses on providing students’ opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to clinical scenarios and simulated environment to enhance their competency and integrate into the Canadian healthcare workforce.

CEIERN 108: Canadian Mental Health Nursing |
Delivery: Blended Prerequisites: CEIERN 103 and 104 This course is designed specifically for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) to gain a comprehensive understanding of Canadian mental health practices. It offers an in-depth exploration of mental health principles, policies, and practices within the Canadian context, preparing IENs to deliver culturally competent and evidence-based mental health care. |
CEIERN 109: Acute Care Medicine & Surgery |
Delivery: In-Person Corequisites: CEIERN 100, 103 and 104 This course is designed for internationally educated nurses (IENs) to integrate their prior knowledge and skills with Canadian standards of acute care. It emphasizes providing comprehensive, patient- and family-centered care while facilitating effective role socialization into the Canadian healthcare system. Through a blend of theoretical instruction and practical application, participants will prepare to deliver high-quality care in acute care settings and seamlessly transition into their roles as Registered Nurses in Canada. |
CEIERN 110: Nursing Practice Maternity - Pediatrics - Mental health Acute Care |
Delivery: In-Person Corequisites: CEIERN 102 and 108 This specialized course is designed for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) seeking to adapt their clinical expertise to the Canadian standards and practices. It offers an intensive, practical approach to nursing across three key areas: Maternity, Pediatrics, Mental Health. Students will enhance their clinical skills, understanding of local healthcare systems, and ability to provide patient-centered care in diverse settings. |
CEIERN 111: Transition to Nursing Practice |
Delivery: In-Person Prerequisites: You must successfully complete CEIERN 100-110 to register for CEIERN 111. This course provides an opportunity to consolidate learning and preparation to assume the role of a registered nurse in Canada through a preceptored clinical experience. Students will spend the majority of this final clinical in an offsite practice setting working one -on-one with a registered nurse preceptor and the course instructor. The placement for the preceptorship is developed in collaboration with faculty and depends on the availability of practicum areas.
