Adaptive Technology

Keyano College is committed to creating an accessible learning environment. If you have a functional limitation or disability that impacts your ability to learn or use certain technology, you may want to use a form of adaptive technology.

We have adaptive technology available to help with:
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Magnification
  • Diagrams
  • Organizing ideas
  • Note taking
  • Highlighting and visual tracking
  • Mind maps and outlines
  • Spelling and grammar
  • Adjustable copy holders and furniture

Requesting adaptive technology

Contact Accessibility Services by email or call 780-791-8934 to set up an adaptive technology assessment appointment.

You'll meet with an Adaptive Technology Specialist (ATS) who will perform an assessment to determine which adaptive technology is right for you. You may need to try different hardware and software options before you find the right one.

Adaptive technologies fall into the following general categories:
  • Text to speech software
  • Voice recognition software
  • Screen magnification software
  • Screen reading software
  • Alternative keyboards
  • Augmentative and alternative communication
  • Hearing and vision devices
  • Other specialized equipment

 Technical support

The Adaptive Technology Specialist (ATS) is available to assist you with any technical difficulties you may have. If they are unable to solve the problem, the ATS will contact the manufacturer and speak with their IT support until a solution is reached.

Training

Adaptive technology is only beneficial if you know how to work the technology. Our ATS will train you and make sure that you are comfortable using the technology. We also have additional resources available through Accessibility Services.  As a student, it is your responsibility to attend the required appointments to learn the technology.

Exam accommodations

You can use adaptive technologies during exams and tests. You will need to meet with Accessibility Services and fill out an accommodation exam booking form. Contact Testing Services and we will make sure that you are placed in a testing room that is equipped with the adaptive technology you need.

Exams that require accommodations must be booked at least seven days in advance.
