At Keyano College, the Go Global program seeks to provide Canadian post-secondary students with international education experiences outside of Canada to obtain practical and educational skills to participate as a Global citizen.

Here are the requirements for those interested in the program:

  • Registered student of Keyano College in good academic standing.
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Enrolment in Cross-Cultural Communication – BUS 288 (As a course requirement or elective)

Application for the May intake is required by March 31, 2023.

Approval Process

Upon submission of the required information and possible pertinent documents, an interview may be arranged with personnel in the International Education Office. 

If approved, students will be sent, via email, more information regarding the next steps in this process. 

 

 

Before You Go - Planning for Success

Orientation

Prior to departure, it will be mandatory that each individual participate in an Orientation session, which will be facilitated by the International Education Office.  This will include, but is not limited to, a wellness check prior to departure to assess the overall wellbeing of any individual participating in this program.

 Pre-departure Preparation
  • Students will be required to complete the Outbound Mobility – Expense Budget Template which will be provided by the International Education Office.  This form will provide a breakdown of the costs to be incurred throughout the outbound mobility program. 
  • Students will be required to meet the following conditions before departure:
    1. Complete a pre-departure orientation as provided by the International Education Office
    2. Review all applicable Code of Conduct  
    3. Review all applicable policies and procedures 
    4. Students will be accepted into this program on the condition that they can acquire a visa to travel to the Host Country. 
  • If required, ensure that you have enough prescribed medication for the length of stay.
  • Refrain from using cannabis 3 months prior to departure as its use may be illegal in your host country.
  • Obtain the appropriate visa for travel.
  • Scan/digitize your passport and visa, email them to yourself and keep them safely so you can access them as needed or in case they are stolen.
  • Register with ROCA (Registration of Canadians Abroad) before the trip to enable the Canadian government to be aware of your location during your trip so they may contact or support you in the event of an emergency.
  • Carry your updated vaccination booklet.
 Personal Security
  • Always carry adequate identification, such as a passport and valid visa.
  • Pay attention to the length of stay permitted after entry on your visa.
  • Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months upon entry.
  • Do not carry large sums of money on your person.
  • Exchange money in legal/recognized money exchange locations in your host country.
  • Ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are always secure.
  • Avoid all gambling activities.
  • Do not go sightseeing unless accompanied by personnel from the partner or host institution and check that security measures are in place.
  • Do not go shopping alone (remain accompanied).
  • Do not use the services of escorts or sex workers.
  • Avoid crowds, demonstrations, militant/religious activities and large-scale outdoor events.
  • Do not photograph or film an individual(s) without their consent.
  • Do not photograph or film public infrastructure and buildings.
  • Refrain from disclosing sexual orientation in countries where there may be legal implications
  • Remain neutral when confronted with local political issues.
  • Do not openly criticize local authorities/government.
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations.
  • Do not consume any drug without a valid prescription.
  • Do not hand out religious material.
 Travel & Lodging
  • Securely lock doors.
  • Only use transportation recommended by your host institution.
  • Avoid unlicensed taxis.
  • Where applicable, do not board ferries that appear overloaded or unseaworthy.
  • Do not travel in the back of a pick-up truck.
  • Do not venture out on foot. It is recommended that you are always accompanied.
  • Do not walk alone at night.
  • Do not travel at night.
  • Do not assist an unknown vehicle that has broken down.
  • Ensure you have enough water supply.
  • When travelling with the service vehicle where applicable, especially in large cities, close the windows at 3/4 and lock the doors. Use the vehicle air conditioner.
 Medical & Sanitation 
  • Avoid contact with animals, including dogs, monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats.
  • Avoid poultry farms and live animal markets.
  • Wear closed-toed shoes.
  • Drink only bottled water.
  • Cover up, use insect repellent and stay in well-screened, air-conditioned accommodations where possible.
  • Do not ingest anything that has not been boiled, cooked, or peeled.
 Vaccination
In order to properly ascertain which vaccines are needed prior to travel, consultation with a health professional is required.

Visas

Keyano College will assist students with obtaining visas, study permits, or Co-op work permits by way of documentation they may be required to submit with their applications. All applicable fees will be the responsibility of the student. 

Health Insurance

 Buying International/Travel Health Insurance
 Insurance Through Your Host Institution 

 Many students are required to get health insurance through their host institution as part of their international short term experience program. While this may mean overlap in your coverage, the host insurance usually only covers while you have formally started the program, not for any travel to or from the host country.

This means you will still need coverage from the time you leave Canada, until the time you return.

 Insurance as A Visa Requirement
Certain countries may require proof of health insurance in order to apply for a visa, work permit, or study permit. You'll need to make sure that, if required, your insurance coverage meets the visa requirements of your destination country.

Safety & Security Abroad

You may visit the Government of Canada Travel Advisories website at any time prior to or during your trip overseas to acquire the Official Global Travel Advisories as it relates to your host country.

Finances

You will not experience a difference in cost in terms of tuition and fees as it involves paying tuition to Keyano College at the rate you currently pay for a full-time course load in your program of study.

Through Keyano College, funding opportunities will be available to assist students who wish to participate in this program. Contact our International Education Office and our team can assist in finding ways to potentially offset any additional cost you may incur.

Living the local lifestyle can often help to alleviate what can seem like a higher cost of living at first, therefore it is important to look at all aspects of life abroad. In some instances, the cost of living in another country can be significantly cheaper.

 Expense Budget Checklist and Considerations
When travelling to your host country, it is very important to factor into your budget, differences in cost of living. Living the local lifestyle can often help to alleviate what can seem like a higher cost of living at first, therefore it is important to look at all aspects of life abroad. In some instances, the cost of living in another country can be significantly cheaper.

 

The International Education Department will assist you in regards to budgeting for this trip: 

  • Air Fare - Transport to your destination is often the biggest cost. It is important to apply early to participate in the Go Global program as airline tickets purchased in advance tend to be much cheaper when purchased in advance.
  • Accommodation – As with transportation, accommodation can be another significant cost while travelling. Booking in advance is always helpful. 
  • Transportation to and from Host Institution’s Campus and airports in and outside of Canada – Arrangements will be made for your transportation to and from the airport.  It will be important to check if there is a reliable public transportation network.  The International Department will work with its students in regards to transportation.
  • Meals – How much you spend on food and drink can vary from country to country and where you choose to purchase food and drink.  Even in some more expensive countries, you can eat cheap. Do a bit of research, there is usually a lot of information online.  Use a cost of living calculator to see how your host country compares to Fort McMurray.  Remember to include snacks and coffee if you need to.
  • Insurance – A lot of people forget about travel insurance.  It is necessary that you factor this into your budget.  It is relatively affordable.

 How expensive is it to participate in the Go Global Program?

You will not experience a difference in cost in terms of tuition and fees as it involves paying tuition to Keyano College at the rate you currently pay for a full-time course load in your program of study.

Please be aware of differences in cost of living among various countries. Living the local lifestyle can often help to alleviate what can seem like a higher cost of living at first, therefore it is important to look at all aspects of life abroad. In some instances, the cost of living in another country can be significantly cheaper.

 Will I lose my scholarship? 
Keyano College offers short term international experiences that may go up to a maximum of two weeks and as such should not affect your scholarship.  However, to ensure that you do not lose your scholarship, please check with the Office of the Registrar before embarking on this program.
 Can I work or study abroad in a country where English is not the first language?
Keyano College has partnerships with institutions in non-English speaking countries that deliver programs in English. As such, this will not hinder you from participating in the program.
 Will participation in this program delay my graduation?
It is always important to seek academic advice and plan before you finalize your program selection to ensure you graduate on time.  If you intend to participate in this program, it is important to know where you are currently in terms of your journey to graduation.
 Are short term international experiences a waste of money?
 Short term international experiences will serve to enrich your resume and increase employment potential. You will have additional skills, which you can include on your resume or CV.  For example:
  • Intercultural communication skills
  • Intercultural competencies
  • The ability to thrive in multicultural environments
  • The ability to collaborate with others around the world
  • The ability to adapt, be flexible, and be tolerant of ambiguity

Studies have shown that short term international experiences make students better problem solvers and creative thinkers and improves their ability to think in complex ways. 

 Will my GPA at risk if I participate in Go Global?
Keyano College has ensured that all partner institutions are accredited, therefore all credits taken outside of Canada transfer back with grades of Pass or Fail and are aligned with the College’s grading scheme.
 Is it difficult to get nominated for this program?
We aim to provide equity and access to all interested students.  Once you remain open to placement, meet the criteria, and are reasonably flexible, you will be nominated.
 Will I be all alone in a new country if I participate in this program?
 In some instances, these short-term international experiences will be led by a member of Keyano College faculty. There will also be instances of multiple students traveling together to the same destination country.
