Governor's General Award
Lord Dufferin, Canada’s third Governor General after Confederation, created the Academic Medals in 1873 to encourage academic excellence across the nation. Over the years, they have become the most prestigious award that students in Canadian schools can receive.
For more than 140 years, the Governor General’s Academic Medals have recognized the outstanding scholastic achievements of students in Canada. They are awarded to the student graduating with the highest average from a high school, as well as from approved college or university programs. Pierre Trudeau, Tommy Douglas, Kim Campbell, Robert Bourassa, Robert Stanfield and Gabrielle Roy are just some of the more than 50 000 people who have received the Governor General’s Academic Medal as the start of a life of accomplishment.
Today, the Governor General’s Academic Medals are awarded at four distinct levels: Bronze at the secondary school level; Collegiate Bronze at the post-secondary, diploma level; Silver at the undergraduate level; and Gold at the graduate level. Medals are presented on behalf of the Governor General by participating educational institutions, along with personalized certificates signed by the Governor General. To maintain a spirit of universality across the country, the Directives were designed to ensure that the medals are awarded on academic marks only, regardless of the more intangible qualities of students’ life, such as good citizenship, moral behaviour or popularity.
The COLLEGIATE BRONZE medal is awarded to the student who achieves the highest overall average upon graduation from a diploma-level, postsecondary program (minimum two-year, full-time duration)
The Governor General Award winner will be announced after selection.

Today, we stand at the threshold of a new and exciting chapter—one shaped by the lessons we’ve learned, the friendships we’ve built, and the many challenges we’ve overcome. As we gather to celebrate this incredible milestone, I want to take a moment to recognize each graduate and extend my warmest congratulations.
Our journey was so much more than lectures, lab reports, co-op terms, and practicums. It was a journey of growth, perseverance, and transformation. We’ve tackled tough group projects, powered through late-night study sessions, adapted to new learning environments, and for many, survived at least two Fort McMurray winters. Every challenge we faced helped shape us into who we are today—strong, capable, and ready for whatever comes next.
To our instructors, thank you for pushing us to think deeper, guiding us with patience, and helping us discover our true potential. To our families, friends, and the Fort McMurray community—your unwavering support made this day possible, and we are endlessly grateful. And to my fellow graduates: congratulations! Our hard work, commitment, and determination have brought us here. Today, we celebrate the sweet reward of our efforts.
As we step into our future careers, further studies, or take time to reflect and explore, let’s carry forward the same passion and drive that brought us here. Whatever your next step may be, take it boldly, with purpose, and with the confidence that you are prepared.
The foundation has been laid. The connections we’ve made are lifelong.
Cheers, Huskies—to bold steps and bright futures!

Today we celebrate not just the completion of our academic journey, but the beginning of countless new opportunities that await us. As we gather to mark this momentous occasion, we reflect on everything that has brought us to this point.
Our time at Keyano College has transformed us in ways we never imagined. We arrived with diverse backgrounds, goals, and dreams, yet we leave united by shared experiences and mutual growth. The challenges we faced, whether mastering difficult subjects, balancing work, personal life, and studies, or finding our place in a new community, have equipped us with skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
Through sleepless nights preparing for exams, collaborative projects that tested our patience and creativity, and moments of doubt when the finish line seemed impossibly distant, we discovered strengths within ourselves we never knew existed. The resilience we developed here will serve us throughout our lives.
To our instructors your guidance has been invaluable. You created a supportive environment where learning could flourish, and your dedication made all the difference. To our families whose encouragement never wavered, your belief in us helped make this achievement possible.
As we step forward into our futures, let us carry not only our knowledge but also compassion, integrity, and hope into a world that needs these qualities more than ever. Let us share light where there is darkness, understanding where there is conflict, and love where there is indifference.
Congratulations, Class of 2025. Our journey is just beginning.
