Keyano College is committed to supporting and promoting a welcoming, inclusive and sustainable learning environment. If you have a functional limitation or disability, Accessibility Services will support you by providing accommodations, adaptive technologies and learning strategies to facilitate your learning.

We collaborate with students, faculty and staff to ensure that you receive the appropriate accommodations and have equal access to the full range of programs offered at the college.

 

Accommodations

 A learning strategist can work with you to arrange academic accommodations, teach you learning strategies.
 What are learning strategies? 
 Learning strategies are ways to make learning more efficient.

Tests and Exams

 What are my options as a student for accommodations for Academic Tests and Final Exams?

If you need accommodations for academic tests or final exams you have two options for testing:

  1. Online with your instructor
  2. In-person or virtually through Testing Services

How far in advance do I need to book accommodations for tests?

Test accommodations with your instructor or Testing Services need to be booked 7 calendar days before the test set by the instructor.

 

Please note, when booking an accommodated test in testing services, you will need to specify whether you need a virtual or in-person session.

How far in advance do I need to book accommodations for Final Exams

The last day to book accommodated exams through Testing Services will be noted here each semester. 

 

Accommodations take time to arrange. The last day to meet a Learning Strategist to arrange new accommodations for final exams in credit-based programs (excluding trades, LINC, Continuing Education, Primary Care Paramedic (PCP), Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP), and Power Engineering) will  be noted here each semester. After this date, accommodations for final exams for that semester cannot be guaranteed by the College.

New and Prospective Students

 How can I request Academic Accommodations?

Whether you are a current student or prospective student, we are here to work with your accommodation needs.  To request academic accommodations, please book an appointment with An Access Strategist by booking online, emailing accessibility.services@keyano.ca or calling 780-791-8934.

During your appointment, appropriate in-class and exam accommodations will be determined.  Please see the "What accommodations are potentially available?" tab below for more information about your accommodations. 

Is documentation required to access accommodations?
We require documentation of disability impacts to understand how your disability impacts you in the Post-Secondary environment. If you qualify for exam or test accommodations, you need to book your testing room and time through Testing Services. 
 Is adaptive technology available? 
We provide adaptive technology as a way to support your learning. Our Adaptive Technology Specialist is available to assess your needs and teach you how to use the technology to enhance your learning and help you gain independence through technology. 
Can I get help with learning strategies?

What are my roles and responsibilities when accessing Accessibility Services?
  • Review policy on Accommodations for Students with Disabilities.
  • Choose to disclose that you have a disability.
  • Initiate accommodations when required.
  • To better ensure success, seek assistance for accommodation prior to course or program commencement, to allow as much lead time as possible.   
  • Engage in dialogue with Accessibility Services to request accommodations.
  • Provide formal documentation to support disability from qualified professional.
  • Attend training with the Assistive Technologist on the use of your assigned technology.
  • Refer to the Student Code of Conduct for appeal information.  

 

Current Students

When should I see an Access Strategist? 
In order to receive academic accommodations, you must meet with an Access Strategist each term. It is best to do this before your classes start or within the first week and no later than the cut-off dates listed above
 How do I book an appointment to see an Access Strategist?

 I have an exam coming up! What should I do? 
Students should meet with Accessibility Services at the beginning of each academic term to determine eligibility for exam accommodations. 

Exams with accommodations must be booked at least seven days in advance to ensure the appropriate time, space and resources (e.g., reader, scribe, alternate format) are available.  Students are responsible for booking their own exams before the cut-off dates to ensure accommodations can be implemented.

 How do I book an accommodated exam?
  1. Click on “Book Now” 
  2. New Users must create an account. 
  3. Record your user name and password for future appointments 
  4. Select Test Taker Type as "Internal Student" 
  5. Select Add-on Services as "Accommodated Exam" 
  6. Select Schedule (Room) as "Accommodation Room" if opting for in-person proctoring in campus 
  7. Select Schedule as "Virtual Invigilation" if opting for online proctoring 
  8. Select your preferred date and time slot. 
  9. Fill in the remaining fields about the exam. 
  10. In the Special Instructions box, fill in the accommodations you will need for the exam. 
  11. Submit to finalize your appointment. 
  12. If the preferred date is unavailable(greyed), you can join the waitlist. Use the "Join Waiting Listoption available on the main menu. Testing Services will then contact you.   

Adaptive Technology

 What is adaptive Technology? 

Adaptive Technology is equipment and software that is used by students with disabilities to support their learning and make the educational experience more accessible. 

 

Adaptive technologies can be generally categorized as:  

  • Text to speech software 

  • Voice recognition software 

  • Screen magnification software 

  • Screen reading software 

  • Alternative keyboards 

  • Augmentative and alternative communication 

  • Hearing and vision devices 

  • Other specialized equipment 

 How can I request adaptive technology? 
You can request adaptive technology by booking online, emailing accessibility.services@keyano.ca or by calling 780-791-8934 to set up an adaptive technology assessment appointment. 
 How will I know what adaptive technology will work for me?
You'll meet with an Adaptive Technology Specialist (ATS) who will perform an assessment to determine which adaptive technology is right for you. You may need to try different hardware and software options before you find the right one. 
Will I receive support if I have any issues with my Adaptive Technology?
The Adaptive Technology Specialist (ATS) is available to assist you with any technical difficulties you may have. If they are unable to solve the problem, the ATS will contact the manufacturer and speak with their IT support until a solution is reached. 
 Can I use adaptive technologies during exams and tests?

You can use adaptive technologies during exams and tests. You will need to meet with Accessibility Services and fill out an accommodation exam booking form. Contact Testing Services and we will make sure that you are placed in a testing room that is equipped with the adaptive technology you need. 

Exams that require accommodations must be booked at least seven days in advance.
