Posted On Tuesday February 27, 2024

The Keyano Huskies men's volleyball team soared to great heights during the 2023-24 season, culminating in a remarkable achievement at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) tournament. It was an intense competition in Olds College from Wednesday, February 21 to Saturday, February 24, and the Huskies demonstrated their competence and resilience on the court, supported by the Presenting Sponsor, the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC).

Facing off against tough opponents, the Keyano Huskies showcased their determination and skill. Their journey began with a commanding victory over Olds College in three sets, followed by a hard-fought battle against Lakeland College, triumphing in five sets. These victories propelled them to the pinnacle of the tournament, where they faced off against the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in the finals, where they earned a silver medal.

The silver medal was a testament to their dedication and skill. Coach Keegan Kuhr looked back on the team's journey, recognizing that they fell short in the finals but also highlighting the importance of their accomplishment. “Although the outcome against Nait College was not what we hoped for, their experience and depth posed a formidable challenge. Nonetheless, reaching the finals is a testament to the dedication and resilience of our team," remarked Coach Kuhr.

The entire Keyano community celebrates the team's remarkable season and historic achievement of securing another silver medal. Keyano had standout performances from several student-athletes during the tournament, earning two major ACAC honours: João Cunha - North Division Player of the Year, and Rafael Parada - North Division Rookie of the Year. Additionally, four student-athletes were named to the ACAC's North Division All-Conference team: João Cunha, Athus Silva, Anderson King, and Rafael Parada. Moreover, two student-athletes were named to the tournament All-Star Team: Preston Yole & Rafael Parada.

"The Men's Volleyball team raised the bar again this year," remarked Keyano College's Director of Athletics & Recreation, Jonathan Lambert. "Under Coach Kuhr's leadership, the team achieved the top spot in the North Division for the first time since 2018-19, showcasing their ongoing commitment to excellence. His dedication to continual improvement gave our team a competitive edge in each match, and we really saw the benefits of that from the start of the season through to this past weekend."

As they prepare for the upcoming 2024-25 season, the Keyano Huskies are grateful for the unwavering support of their fans and the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo community. They look forward to returning to the court, fueled by the memories of their past successes and inspired by the promise of future triumphs.

Congratulations to the Keyano Huskies men's volleyball team on their outstanding season, and best wishes for continued success in the years to come!
