Keyano College, in partnership with McMurray Aviation, will offer a Business Aviation Diploma program this fall.

This two-year program is designed to combine 12 aviation and eight business courses for students to graduate with a Commercial Pilot License and a background in business.

The program will have two specializations: Airline Operations (larger airplanes commercial pilot stream) or Northern Operations (using floats, landing on smaller airstrips and lakes). Both streams will have common aviation courses towards private pilot license, crew resource management, transportation of dangerous goods, pilot decision-making, and wilderness survival first aid to help graduates be prepared for their future career.

“This is one of the very few opportunities in Canada where potential students can apply without any prior aviation experience as most programs require a private pilot license. We will be accepting students with or without aviation experience,” said Chief Flight Instructor, Vignesh Rajasekar.

After being approached by McMurray Aviation in late 2018 about a possible partnership, the College and McMurray Aviation jointly commissioned a Needs Assessment Study (NAS) last year.

Key findings of the NAS revealed there is an increased demand for airline pilots and aviation management professionals due to industry growth, demographic (retirement) trends and regulatory changes (continuous flying hours reduction).

“Keyano College continues to diversify its program base in very meaningful ways. This program addresses a skills shortage gap, it removes barriers to those wanting to join the aviation industry, it is a great example of an industry and College partnership, and it provides very exciting opportunities for students within our region. We are very excited to be bringing this type of innovative programming to the Fort McMurray region,” said Vice President Academic, Fred Russell.

McMurray Aviation possesses all relevant Transport Canada certifications and instructional staff to make this innovative partnership successful.
