Keyano College Launches Credit-Based Bridge to Canadian Nursing Program

Posted On Thursday May 29, 2025

Fort McMurray, AB – [May 29, 2025] – Keyano College is excited to share a significant update to one of its most impactful programs. The Bridge to Canadian Nursing program is now a credit-bearing certificate — opening up new possibilities for internationally educated nurses (IENs) who want to continue their careers here in Alberta.

Starting in the 2025–2026 academic year, the Bridge to Canadian Nursing will be offered as a 36-credit, one-year certificate that helps IENs meet the registration requirements of the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta. That means a clearer, more accessible path to licensure and meaningful work in healthcare across the province.

This isn't just about credits; it's about confidence. It's about giving skilled professionals the tools they need to thrive — not just survive — in the Canadian healthcare system.

Susan's Story: A Bridge That Made the Difference

Susan Waytan knows that journey well. Originally from Baguio City, Philippines, Susan completed her nursing education there, then gained experience in psychiatric care and occupational health — including in Tanzania — before moving to Canada.

Even with that experience, she had to start over. She was hired as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with Alberta Health Services, but the road to becoming a Registered Nurse felt steep and uncertain. The Bridge to Canadian Nursing program at Keyano College changed that.

"A few months before completing the program, my manager was finally able to transition me into an RN role," she said.

"This program helped validate my international training and gave me the chance to grow. My motivation has always been the desire to have the same opportunities as everyone else. Everyone deserves a fair chance to succeed."

For Susan, the impact of the Bridge to Canadian Nursing program was both professional and personal.

"From hope to action — this program ignited my growth and launched my nursing journey to new heights in Canada."

More Support, More Opportunity

Now that the program carries credit, students are eligible to apply for student loans, making it more affordable for many. Keyano is also working to secure bursaries for IEN through the Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RhPAP), that would further reduce financial barriers.

Students will complete a mix of classroom learning, labs, simulations, and 540 hours of supervised clinical practice — all designed to prepare them to provide high-quality, patient-centred care in real-world settings.

For those not looking for a full certificate, Keyano will continue offering its Refresher Program through Continuing Education — an option for both IENs and locally trained nurses who want to update their skills.

A Program Built with Community

The Bridge to Canadian Nursing program has grown with strong community support, including healthcare leaders who see its value every day.

We are thrilled to hear of the announcement that the Bridge to Canadian Nursing Program is transitioning to a credit program for the 2025–2026 academic year. This is a significant milestone in expanding access to high-quality education for internationally educated nurses and supporting their successful integration into Alberta’s healthcare system.

Hines Health Services is proud to continue our longstanding partnership with Keyano College. Together, we remain committed to building strong pathways for IENs to thrive in their careers, contribute to their communities, and strengthen our local healthcare workforce.

As a proud alumna of the Keyano nursing program, I know firsthand the value of accessible, inclusive, and empowering education. This initiative is a testament to the forward-thinking leadership at Keyano College, and we look forward to supporting this next chapter.”

— Kristi Hines, BScN, RN, OHN, Founder and CEO, Hines Health Services

The Alberta Association of Nurses (AAN) is an association for Alberta nurses that collectively advocates, provides meaningful connection, professional development, and member benefits for all nursing professions. The IEN navigator supports all nurses educated outside of Canada. The IEN Navigator is please to support the transition of the Bridge to Canadian Nursing Certificate program at Keyano College to a credit program.

This program will be a benefit to our region through the development of graduates who will be prepared for sustainable careers and, who will be able to help fulfill labor market demand in the health-care field of nursing.”

-Holly Crowe, RN, BScN, MN, IEN Navigator, Alberta Association of Nurses

The program is open to international students who meet admission requirements—not only those who are already Canadian citizens or permanent residents. This inclusive approach broadens access to high-quality education and supports the integration of internationally educated nurses (IENs) into Alberta’s healthcare system.
