Keyano College is offering a new 4th Class Power Engineering Program

Posted On Thursday October 14, 2021

Keyano College will be offering a new 4th class power engineering program with the first cohort starting in February 2022.

The new program will allow students to complete their 4th class certificate and be work-ready without having to secure a work term. Students will instead receive their steam time, which would usually be on-site, in the College’s dedicated Oilsands Power and Processing Engineering Lab (OPPEL).

Due to the pandemic the number of available work terms have dropped significantly but power engineers remain in demand, this program will support the oilsands in providing qualified, site-ready graduates, ready for work. Another key difference in this program is that international students will be accepted.

Dean of Trades and Heavy Industrial, Caitlin Hartigan said, “This new program is a great addition to Keyano College’s Power Engineering department. The new program will now be accessible to international students, provide an opportunity for the program to achieve Standardization of Power Engineer Examinations Committee (SOPEEC) accreditation, as well as guarantee a standardized exemplary level of competencies for learners.”

“This new program combines the College’s 200-hour Power Lab course with 4th Class theory, allowing learners to achieve a significant amount of hands-on experience, while earning their required 4th Class Steam time.”

The program is now accepting applicants for February 2022, for more information visit Keyano.ca/power.
