The Social Work Diploma Program at Keyano College equips you with the ethical foundation, hands-on training, and critical thinking skills needed to support individuals, families, and communities in Northern Alberta and beyond.

Over two years, you'll explore social justice, counselling, community development, Indigenous perspectives, and more - gaining both classroom learning and real-world practicum experience. Approved by Alberta Advanced Education and accredited by the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW), this program is your pathway to front-line work or further education in a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW).

Graduates may also be eligible to continue into Keyano College's Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program, subject to admission requirements.

Program Details

High School Diploma (or equivalent):

You must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) with:

  • A minimum of 60% in English 30-1

Mature Students (21+):

Applicants who are 21 years of age or older at the time of admission are considered mature students. Mature students must meet the same admission requirements as outlined above.

Additional Requirements:

  • Pre-entry interview with the Chair of Human Services
  • Character reference from an employer, teacher, or community leader, or other approved source.
  • Child Welfare and Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (dated no earlier than July 1)
  • Completion of Social Work Applicant Information Package

English Language Proficiency (if applicable):

  • TOEFL iBT: minimum score of 86 with no score below 21
  • IELTS Academic: minimum score of 6.5 with no score below 5.0
  • CAEL: minimum score of 70
  • MELAB: minimum score of 85
  • Duolingo: minimum score of 100
  • PTE (Academic): minimum score of 58

Throughout the program, you'll complete two practicum placements in community agencies, where you'll work alongside experienced social workers and other human service professionals. These placements give you the opportunity to apply what you've learned in class, gain hands-on experience supporting individuals, families, and communities, and develop the practical skills needed to begin your career in social work.
