The University Transfer: Bachelor of Social Work Program provides the first 60 credits toward a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). Through a combination of social work, psychology, sociology, and related courses, you'll build the knowledge and skills needed for further study in the field.

The program is approved by Alberta Advanced Education and accredited by the Alberta College of Social Workers. After completing the program, you can transfer to a university to continue your Bachelor of Social Work.

Transfer Options: University of Calgary and other Alberta post-secondary institutions.

Program Details

High School Diploma (or equivalent):

You must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) with an average of 60% in:

  • English 30-1
  • Four subjects from groups A, B or C (only one subject from group B accepted for admission)

Mature Students (21+):

Must be 21 years of age by the first day of classes and have a minimum of 60% in:

  • English 30-1

English Language Proficiency (if applicable):

  • TOEFL iBT: minimum score of 86 with no score below 21
  • IELTS Academic: minimum overall band score of 6.5 no score below 5.0
  • CAEL: minimum score of 70
  • MELAB: minimum score of 85
  • Duolingo: minimum score of 115
  • PTE (Academic): minimum score of 58

Students are encouraged to follow the recommended two-year course load:

Year 1

  • 6 credits of Junior English (e.g., ENGL 125)
  • SOWK 201 – Introduction to Social Work
  • 21 credits of Arts or Science electives

Year 2

  • 30 credits of Arts or Science electives
  • Recommended disciplines:
    • Psychology
    • Sociology
    • Indigenous Studies
    • History
    • English
