The Academic Foundations Certificate Program at Keyano College is designed to help adult learners strengthen their English and Math skills - whether you're preparing for high school-level College Preparation courses, improving your job readiness, or building the confidence to return to school.

Flexible learning formats and supportive instruction create an accessible pathway to future education or employment.

What Is the Academic Foundations Certificate?

The Academic Foundations Certificate Program is an entry-level upgrading program designed for learners who need to strengthen their English and math skills before entering Grade 10–12 College Preparation or the workforce.

Successful completion of this program can also lead to a High School Equivalency Diploma, opening pathways to further education or employment.

Program Details

To be eligible for this program:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must demonstrate academic skills below Grade 10 by either:
    • Submitting transcripts showing less than Grade 10 education, or
    • Completing an ACCUPLACER placement test

English Language Proficiency (if applicable)

You must meet one of the following minimum scores:

  • TOEFL iBT: 40
  • IELTS Academic: 5.0
  • CLBPT or CLBA: No score below 5.0
  • CELPIP General: 5.0
  • Duolingo: 70

Students may take one or both Academic Foundations courses in the same semester or in different semesters, in any order.

Students who complete both Academic Foundations courses with a minimum grade of 60% will earn the Academic Foundations Certificate.

  • These estimates are based on 100% enrolment for all semesters and do not include mandatory laboratory fees. Laboratory fees can range from $35-$135.
  • *Students will be charged a medical/dental benefit fee unless they opt out by demonstrating alternative coverage - deadlines can be found at StudentCare website.
    ** Tuition is due 10 business days before the start of each semester.

You may qualify for the Foundational Learning Assistance Program from the Government of Alberta. This can help cover tuition and basic living expenses.

To apply:

  1. Apply and be accepted into the program
  2. Request that Keyano confirms your enrollment
  3. Set up a MyAlberta Digital ID
  4. Watch for an email from foundational.learning.assistance@gov.ab.ca
  5. Apply at least 8 weeks before your program starts
