Begin your path toward becoming a secondary school teacher at Keyano College. You'll study education alongside your chosen teaching subjects before transferring to a university to complete your Bachelor of Education.

Throughout the program, you'll build the foundation needed for the final years of your degree and a future in secondary education.

Graduates with a Bachelor of Education may pursue careers in secondary education and related learning environments. Possible career paths include:

Graduates may also pursue graduate studies in education, educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, or other related fields.

Program Details

High School Diploma (or equivalent):

You must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) with a minimum average of 60% with no mark below 50% in:

English 30-1
Three subjects from Groups A or C
Subject from Group A, B or C

Completion of Math 30-1 or Math 30-2 is highly recommended as they are prerequisites for required math courses in the program.

Mature Students (21+):

Students who are 21 years of age or older by the first day of classes and have not completed all five courses listed above can enter the program as a mature student. Mature applicants are required to have a minimum average of 60% with no mark below 50% in:

English 30-1
Subject from Group A or C

Completion of Math 30-1 or Math 30-2 is highly recommended as they are prerequisites for required math courses in the program.

After Degree Students:

Students with a three-year or four-year accredited degree in Arts, Science, Commerce, or General Studies can complete their education degree in 2 years by entering the collaborative degree program in year 3. Additional requirements include completion of the following courses:

English Language Proficiency (if applicable):

TOEFL iBT: minimum score of 86 with no score below 21
IELTS Academic: minimum overall band score of 6.5 no score below 5.0
CAEL: minimum score of 70
MELAB: minimum score of 85
Duolingo: minimum score of 115
PTE (Academic): minimum score of 58

These estimates are based on 100% enrolment for all semesters and do not include mandatory laboratory fees. Laboratory fees can range from $35-$135 for 2025-2026.

Field Experiences

Students complete classroom placements during Years 3 and 4 of the program. These placements give you the opportunity to apply what you've learned while working alongside experienced teachers in elementary school classrooms.

The program includes a five-week introductory field experience in Year 3 and a nine-week advanced field experience in Year 4.

Can I complete the full degree at Keyano College?

No. This program allows you to complete the first two years at Keyano before transferring to a partner university to complete your degree.

Does Keyano offer After Degree options in secondary education?

Yes. Students with a completed bachelor’s degree may apply directly to Year 3 of a collaborative Bachelor of Education program. Contact the Program Chair for guidance.

Will this program make me eligible to teach high school?

Yes, upon completion of the full B.Ed. (Secondary) degree at a partner university, you may apply for Alberta teaching certification for Grades 7–12.

What if I want to transfer to a university other than the University of Alberta?

You may be able to transfer to another university. Academic advisors can help you choose courses that align with your transfer goals.
