The Power Engineering 6-month, 200-Hour Lab is a non-credit, continuing education program designed for individuals who have completed ABSA-certified 4th Class Power Engineering theory (Parts A and B) but still require the six-month steam-time experience necessary for certification.
This hands-on course builds practical competency in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting power plant systems, bridging the gap between classroom theory and industry expectations.
Upon completion, students are prepared to challenge the ABSA 4A and 4B certification exams and pursue careers in Alberta’s growing industrial and energy sectors.
Note: The 200-hour Power Lab at Keyano is intended for 4th Class steam time only, not 3rd Class.

What’s the difference between this and ABSA theory courses?
This is a practical lab course. While ABSA Parts A & B cover theory, this course provides the required six months of hands-on experience (steam time) to qualify for certification.
Do I need to complete both theory parts before taking this course?
Yes. Completion of ABSA 4th Class Power Engineering Part A and B is required before registering.
When can I write the ABSA certification exams?
Can I take this course without prior work experience in Power Engineering?
Yes. No work experience is required, only successful completion of the theory component.
There is no dedicated financial aid available for this course at this time. You may contact the Office of the Registrar to discuss funding options or explore third-party funding (e.g., employment agencies or training subsidies).
