Keyano Highlights Regional Impact During Visit from Minister of Advanced Education

Keyano welcomed senior Government of Alberta representatives to campus this week for conversations focused on post-secondary education, workforce development and opportunities in the Wood Buffalo region.

Minister of Advanced Education Myles McDougall and Deputy Minister of Advanced Education Shannon Marchand met with members of Keyano’s Board of Governors and senior leadership on Monday.

The roundtable gave Keyano an opportunity to speak directly with provincial leaders about the institution’s priorities and its role in preparing students for careers, supporting regional workforce needs, and strengthening partnerships with industry and community.

“This visit showcased the people, programs and partnerships that make Keyano an important part of the Wood Buffalo region,” said Dr. Scott MacPherson, President and CEO of Keyano. “Keyano is deeply connected to this region, and we want to continue working with government, industry and our partners to expand opportunities for the people who live and work here.”

Those strengths were highlighted throughout the visit, from hands-on training and simulation technology to athletics, innovation and student supports.

Provincial representatives experienced some of the technology used to prepare students for real-world environments, including Keyano’s ambulance, welding and heavy equipment simulators. The visit also showcased the Wood Buffalo Regional Innovation Network and opportunities to strengthen connections among Keyano, industry, entrepreneurs and the broader community.

At the Bouchier Indigenous Student Centre, representatives learned more about the new space and Keyano’s efforts to support Indigenous student success while creating opportunities for culture, connection and learning on campus.

The visit also included a meeting between the Minister and representatives from the Students' Association, providing an opportunity to discuss the student experience and priorities directly with provincial leaders. Provincial representatives also connected with members of the Keyano community, including student-athletes training at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.

For Keyano, the visit reinforced relationships with the province and highlighted the importance of ensuring northern Alberta’s strengths, needs and potential are reflected in conversations about the future of post-secondary education in Alberta.
