On Friday, January 29, Premier Jason Kenney announced that Alberta will begin to reduce restrictions on the province as the COVID-19 caseload declines.

During his press conference, Kenney announced that measures will relax using hospitalizations as the benchmark. He continued by saying that if cases spike in the future and a viral variant takes hold, the province will increase restrictions once again. The first step in the plan to reopen begins February 8 and will include allowing one-on-one personal training to take place by appointment. Although this measure will be put in place, the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre (SSWC) has decided to remain closed as an increase in cases could result in the facility having to rescind this offer to the public.

The four steps caseload numbers are:

Step one – February 8

Step two – If hospitalizations are under 450

Step three – If hospitalizations are under 300

Step four – If hospitalizations are under 150

The province announced that the plan will be based on the advice of health experts and that there will be a three-week minimum between steps. The SSWC will continue to monitor the situation closely to determine when it will open for public use based on the Government of Alberta’s determinations.
