The Keyano Huskies Engaged 120 Youth in Sports to Combat Hunger in Wood Buffalo.

On Friday, December 1, 2023, Keyano College Huskies Athletics organized the Huskies Holiday Camp to support the Wood Buffalo Food Bank Association, hosting over 120 youth between the ages of 6 - 13 who donated an impressive 306lbs of food as their registration 'fees'.

The Huskies decided to get together during this holiday season to collect food donations to support the food bank and promote athleticism amongst youth in the community – they got to try their hand at basketball, volleyball, and soccer with some student-athletes.

Fred Russell, Vice President of Strategy & Business Transformation at Keyano College, noted, “We are so proud of our award-winning Huskies who continue to give to the community in many ways by helping those in need and entertaining our future students. The inspiring efforts of our student-athletes and staff in addressing hunger in Wood Buffalo are commendable.”

The idea originated with Athletics Manager and Head Coach of the Men's Basketball team, Jeremy Wielenga along with the Coordinator of Huskies Community Outreach and Head Coach of the Men’s Volleyball team, Keegan Kuhr, who decided to combine the goals of community enrichment, promoting physical and sports literacy for youth while also supporting a non-profit on the front line of community assistance.

“The Huskies Holiday Camp aims to foster the values of giving and ensure that youth understand the impact of their generosity on the lives of others and those struggling during this time of year. This camp was a way for the Huskies to give back to a community that always gives the Huskies so much support,” said Kuhr.

Keyano College is thankful to the youth of Wood Buffalo for showing up for those facing economic difficulties, and we are grateful for those who have given their time and donations and embraced the spirit of teamwork and athleticism with our student-athletes.
