Keyano College Celebrates Collegiate Soccer Success

Keyano Huskies Soccer teams earn Gold and Silver at the ACAC Championships, with Head Coach Niels Slotboom named Coach of the Year as Huskies receive multiple honours.

Keyano College’s Men’s and Women’s Soccer Huskies have proudly earned Gold and Silver at the 2023 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Soccer Championships in Edmonton. For the fourth time in ACAC history and the first time since 2017, the Men’s Soccer Huskies were crowned as the Champions of the outdoor season, while the Women’s Soccer Huskies earned Silver for the first time in history.

“Our athletes have followed the Huskies’ mission on and off the field and are now able to reap the benefits of their hard work and dedication,” said Niels Slotboom, Head Coach of the Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams.

The Huskies men's team, proudly supported this year by Diversified Transportation, defeated NAIT Ooks 2-2 (4-3 in penalties), initially down 2-0 in the final 20 minutes; they became victorious on penalty kicks, with an impressive stop by McMurrayite goalkeeper Corbin Cyprien. Cyprien was also recognized as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and was named to the Tournament All-Star team, including Karl Tronche, James Bartha, and William Ly.

Women’s Soccer competed against SAIT Trojans, with Natalie Orellana striking for the Huskies and Felicia Rodney equalizing the game. Also recognized as part of the All-Star team were Rodney, Harleen Singh, Marissa Mestre, and Nathalie Andersson. 

Head Coach Niels Slotboom was honoured as the ACAC Men’s Soccer North Division Coach of the Year. “Niels has been a catalyst in bringing our Men’s Soccer program back to their current standing as a leading program in the conference and threat for the ACAC podium,” said Jonathan Lambert, Director of Athletics & Recreation at Keyano College. “This award is well-deserved and recognizes the path to success on which he’s put this program."

Seven players also received honours on the ACAC’s All-Conference teams. This included Cleisson Anklam, Karl Tronche, William Ly, and James Bartha, while Felicia Rodney, Harleen Singh, and Marissa Mestre secured spots for the Women. Of the 44 athletes recognized on the All-Conference teams, the Huskies’ seven All-Conference nominations were the second-best by one ACAC school and first in the ACAC’s North Division. 

We are immensely proud of our teams for their exceptional performances, and we look forward to future victories as they continue to inspire and maintain this momentum of success.
