About Academic Accommodations
Academic accommodations are adjustments to how information is presented, how you demonstrate learning, or how you engage with course materials — without changing the essential requirements of a program.
Accommodations are not one-size-fits-all. They are developed in partnership with you and may include:
- Adjusted exam formats or timelines
- Classroom supports like lecture recordings or note-taking tools
- Access to adaptive technologies
- Quiet or distraction-reduced testing spaces
Accommodations are categorized as:
- Instruction-based – supports used during class or coursework
- Testing-based – supports for quizzes, tests, and exams
Request or Renew Accommodations
To receive academic accommodations, students must complete the Accessibility Services Registration & Renewal Form each term.
Before applying, you’ll need:
- Your student ID and Keyano email address
- Supporting documentation (medical or psychological)
- A list of your current courses and instructors
After submitting your form:
- Accessibility Services will contact you via your Keyano email, usually within 10 business days
- If accommodations are approved, letters will be sent to your instructors with you copied
- If more information is needed, you may be asked to meet with an Access Strategist

Adaptive Technology & Schedule IV Funding
Adaptive technology helps remove barriers related to vision, hearing, mobility, or learning differences. Tools may include:
- Text-to-speech and screen reader software
- Voice recognition tools
- Specialized input devices and keyboards
- Adjustable furniture or visual aids
All students have free access to Read&Write and Microsoft 365 tools with accessibility features.
You may also be eligible for Schedule IV Disability Grant Funding through Alberta Student Aid. This can help cover the cost of specialized software, tools, or support services.
Exams and Testing Services
If your accommodation plan includes exam supports, you’ll book through Testing Services.
You can choose in-person or virtual proctoring for most assessments. Exams must be booked at least three business days in advance. Testing Services will communicate final exam deadlines each term. Late bookings may not be accommodated.
For full instructions on how to book, prepare, and cancel an accommodated exam, visit the Exams and Testing page.

Your Responsibilities as a Student
To ensure your accommodations are implemented smoothly, you are responsible for:
- Choosing to disclose your disability to Accessibility Services
- Providing valid documentation of your functional limitations
- Submitting your accommodation request early each term
- Monitoring your Keyano email for updates and appointment requests
- Booking accommodated exams before published deadlines
- Attending meetings or training sessions as required
- Communicating with your instructors about your accommodation plan
Accessibility Services is here to guide you through the process — but accommodations cannot be applied retroactively.
