General Science Certificate

General Science Certificate

The General Science Certificate Program at Keyano College equips students with foundational scientific knowledge and transferable skills for future academic or career pathways. This flexible, one-year program covers a wide range of disciplines including biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and environmental sciences.

Whether you’re preparing for university transfer into a Bachelor of Science program or looking to gain analytical and quantitative skills for entry-level employment, this program offers a well-rounded academic experience. Students may also choose an optional work-integrated learning placement in the Spring term to gain hands-on experience in a related field.

What You’ll Learn

In the General Science Certificate Program at Keyano College, you will:

  • Build foundational knowledge in core scientific disciplines including biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and mathematics.
  • Develop problem-solving and analytical thinking through laboratory work, research assignments, and real-world applications.
  • Strengthen communication and academic writing skills through required English coursework tailored to scientific contexts.
  • Explore scientific interests across a range of disciplines to help you choose a future specialization in science or health-related fields.
  • Gain transferable skills such as critical thinking, data analysis, and quantitative reasoning applicable in both academic and workplace settings.

Optional: Participate in a work-integrated learning placement to apply your knowledge in a real-world science or technology environment.

Program Structure

Category Requirements

The General Science Certificate requires the completion of 30 credits (typically 10 courses). Students may complete the program over two terms or extend their studies part-time.

General Science

(15 credits minimum)

 

  • Physical Sciences (6 credits):
    CHEM 101, 102, 261, 263; BIOCH 200; PHYS 124, 126
  • Other Sciences (6 credits):
    BIOL 107, 108, 207, 208; EAS 100, 105, 208; SOILS 210; NUTR 100

  • Mathematical Sciences (3 credits):
    MATH 1113, 1115, 1120; STAT 151; COMSC 101, 174, 175

 

English

(3 credits minimum)

  • Choose from: ENGL 103, 104, 125, 221, 289

Electives

(12 credits minimum)

  • Selected from approved courses in Sciences, Social Sciences, or Humanities

Optional Work-Integrated

(3 credits)

  • Available in Spring term for eligible students

Work-Integrated Learning (Optional)

Students may apply for an optional career exploration course that allows them to connect their academic interests with real-world experience.

Admission Requirements

High School Admission

Applicants must present a High School Diploma (or equivalent) with a minimum average of 60% and no mark below 50% in the following:

  • English 30-1

  • Math 30-1

  • Two of Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Physics 30, or Mathematics 31

  • One additional course from Group A, B, or C

Mature Student Admission

Applicants must be 21 years of age by the first day of classes and present:

  • English 30-1

  • Math 30-1

  • Two of Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Physics 30, or Mathematics 31

English Language Proficiency

If English is not your first language, you must meet one of the following:

  • TOEFL iBT: 86 (no section below 21)

  • IELTS: 6.5 (no band below 5.0)

  • CAEL: 70

  • MELAB: 85

  • Duolingo: 115

  • PTE Academic: 58

In addition to meeting English Language Proficiency requirements, students must also meet the admission requirements for their chosen program. See the Credit Calendar for additional details.

Graduation Requirements

To be awarded the General Science Certificate, students must:

  • Complete a minimum of 30 credits

  • Pass all required courses

  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 1.7
