Electrician Apprenticeship
Begin your journey toward a rewarding career as a certified electrician with Keyano College’s Electrician Apprenticeship Program. Over four years, you’ll blend classroom instruction with extensive hands-on experience, building the skills needed to work in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Aligned with Alberta’s apprenticeship and certification standards, this program prepares you to earn your Journeyperson Certificate and Red Seal designation.

What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a structured training model that combines paid, on‑the‑job learning with technical classroom instruction, designed to develop fully qualified tradespeople.
For Electricians in Alberta, the apprenticeship spans four training periods over approximately four years:
Periods 1–2:
- At least 1,560 hours of work experience per year
- 8 weeks of classroom instruction per year
Periods 3–4:
- At least 1,500 hours of work experience per year
- 10 weeks of classroom instruction per year
Here’s How It Works
- Register with Alberta’s Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT system)
- Secure a sponsor/employer for on‑the‑job training
- Alternate between classroom learning and workplace work each year
- Pass period exams after each classroom term
- Challenge the Interprovincial Red Seal Exam in Period 4
- Graduate with your Journeyperson Certificate and Advanced Diploma
Apprentices must show progress within 18 months by completing training milestones. In the final period, apprentices may challenge the Interprovincial Red Seal Exam. Upon successful completion, graduates receive a Journeyperson Certificate and an Advanced Diploma.
