Class 1 Driver Training
Class 1 Driver Training
Also known as Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT)
Alberta is leading the way in commercial truck training with the Class 1 Learning Pathway, also referred to as Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT). This structured, tiered program replaced the traditional Class 1 licensing system in April 2025 and offers a flexible, progressive approach to help new drivers build skills and confidence for a long-term career.
Already started MELT training before April 1, 2025? You have until October 1, 2025 to complete it under the old structure.
Training Tiers
Tier 1: Entry Program
40 Hours Online | $250
The Entry Program introduces the core concepts and foundational knowledge required to become a professional Class 1 driver.
- Delivered online and self-paced
- Covers essential safety, vehicle operation, and career readiness
- Prepares students to write the Class 1 knowledge test
Note: Keyano College currently does not offer instructor support for this portion. You must complete it independently before moving on to the in-yard and in-cab training.
Tier 2: Core Learning Program
60 Hours In-Yard & In-Cab | $6,799
Once you’ve passed the knowledge test, move into practical training:
- Delivered in 15 blocks of 4-hour sessions
- Includes yard work and behind-the-wheel training
- Builds real-world competence
- Requires Air Brake “Q” Endorsement if not already completed
- After successful completion, students earn a provincially restricted Class 1 licence (valid only in Alberta)
This step allows you to start gaining on-the-job experience — like an apprenticeship model — while working toward full licensure.
Tier 3: Competence Building Program
17–25 Hours One-on-One | $2,499
Personalized training designed to refine specific skills:
- Begins with a driving assessment
- Tailored one-on-one instruction to address improvement areas
- Once all competencies are demonstrated, the Alberta-only restriction is removed, and you’ll receive a full Class 1 licence valid across Canada

Important Notes
- Training is delivered in three phases: online, in-yard, and in-cab

- A physician-conducted medical assessment is strongly recommended before starting
- The Air Brake “Q” Endorsement must be completed before in-truck training begins
