What Is the Academic Foundations Certificate?

The Academic Foundations Certificate Program is an entry-level upgrading program designed for learners who need to strengthen their English and math skills before entering Grade 10–12 College Preparation, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), or the workforce.
This flexible, supportive program offers a welcoming re-entry into education for adults ready to take the next step.

What You’ll Learn

Graduates of the Academic Foundations Certificate Program will build core competencies in:

  • Reading, writing, and critical thinking
  • Practical math for daily life, and workplace applications
  • Study habits, confidence, and independent learning strategies

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for this program:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must demonstrate academic skills below Grade 10 by either:
  • Submitting transcripts showing less than Grade 10 education, or
  • Completing an ACCUPLACER placement test

Credential Requirements

Must complete both of the following courses with a minimum grade of 60% to earn the certificate:

  • AFL 100 – Foundational English Language Arts (12 credits)
  • AFM 100 – Foundational Mathematics (8 credits)

English Language Proficiency (if applicable):

You must meet one of the following minimum scores:

  • TOEFL iBT: 40
  • IELTS Academic: 5.0
  • CLBPT or CLBA: No score below 5.0
  • CELPIP General: 5.0
  • Duolingo: 70

You may qualify for the Foundational Learning Assistance Program from the Government of Alberta. This can help cover tuition and basic living expenses.

To apply:

  1. Apply and be accepted into the program
  2. Request that Keyano confirms your enrollment
  3. Set up a MyAlberta Digital ID
  4. Watch for an email from foundational.learning.assistance@gov.ab.ca
  5. Apply at least 8 weeks before your program starts
