Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) Processing Certificate

We offer the Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) Processing Certificate program. This accessible, online training program explores the oil sands' SAGD method of bitumen recovery. The curriculum has been written by industry experts on the subject.

Tuition and fees

Each online module has a different cost. All prices are subject to GST:

  • Module 1 - Well Pads: $345.00
  • Module 2 - Bitumen Processing: $495.00
  • Module 3 - Produced Water De-Oiling: $495.00
  • Module 4 - Water Treatment: $345.00

Each course includes a $5.00 per course tech fee.

Program structure

Each online module is self-guided so you can learn at your own pace.

You must achieve a passing grade of 80% for all modules to complete the certificate program.

Modules

This program's modules include:

Module 1 - Well Pads

You will learn how high pressure steam is used to recover heavy bitumen to the surface, how lift gas enhances this recovery and how the produced fluids are separated into liquid and gas components for transportation to the SAGD processing facility.

Module 2 - Bitumen Processing

You will learn how the recovered SAGD emissions are processed to remove water and vapour components, how the remaining oil is diluted for transportation and how any off-spec product is recycled and re-processed to meet Sales Oil specifications. You will also learn about the systems needed for control and processing of recovered hydrocarbon gases for use as facility fuel gas.

Module 3 - Produced Water De-Oiling

You will learn how water recovered from the SAGD emulsions is processed to remove oil and solids, how precipitation softening happens and how produced water is aerated to prepare its use as facility boiler feed water.

Module 4 - Water Treatment

You will learn how de-oiled produced water is softened to boiler feed water specifications, how the soft water is treated and processed to low pressure boiler feed water, how it is pre-heated and increased in pressure to high pressure boiler feed water, and how the high pressure steam is depressurized for many facility purposes.
