Enhanced Industrial Cleaning Training for Newcomers

Keyano College will start offering a government-funded (free) Enhanced Industrial Cleaning Training program for unemployed and under-employed newcomers this fall.

You will join an 8-week program to enhance English Language and Communication skills, Occupational Industrial Cleaning knowledge, and Essential skills. Participants will also earn required safety certificates to work for industrial cleaning companies.  Keyano College will support connecting successful program graduates with employment opportunities within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Admission Requirements

  • Permanent Residents including Convention Refugees, and Naturalized Canadian Citizens
  • Currently Unemployed or Under-employed
  • Must be healthy and seek to gain a full-time employment in the industrial cleaning area after completing the training
  • Have a minimum CLB language level of 5 in all four areas


  • October 25, 2021 - December 17, 2021 (Session cancelled)
  • February 14 - April 8, 2022
  • May 2, 2022 - June 24, 2022
  • September 12 - November 4, 2022


  • 8 weeks - Participants must attend all eight weeks.
  • Monday – Friday
  • 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (one-hour lunch break), or
  • 9:00 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. (30-minute lunch break) during weeks which contain a statutory holiday.

English Language Communication Skills
 2 weeks 
  • Focus on improving English comprehension including speaking, reading and writing to enhance their communication skills in the workplace.
  • A focus on relevant occupational terms and vocabulary specific to the custodial and industrial cleaning field will also be included.
 Occupational Skills Training
 2 weeks 
  • Cover General Hazard Identification and Control, General Protective Equipment and Clothing, Respiratory Protection Principles, WHMIS, “Regular Cleaning Principles, Introduction to Infectious Disease Outbreaks/Pandemics, Infectious Disease-related Cleaning, Sanitizing, Disinfecting, Alberta OHS Act and Regulations, Code overview, Joint OHS Committee and Basic Facility Maintenance and repair.


 Essential Skills Training
 2 weeks
  • Computer Fundamentals, including commonly used features and functions, document management, use search engines and create an email account using Microsoft Outlook.
  • Customer Service focused on the six critical elements of customer service and problem solving skills, and behavior impacts on others.
  • Acquire skills to develop a professional resume and cover letter.
  • Attain experience with online job search strategies, including completing online applications.
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System WHMIS, CSO (Common Safety Orientation), and CSTS (Construction Safety Training System).


 Employment Supports
2 weeks 
  • Develop resume, provide feedback and suggested revision.
  • Provide interview preparedness activities including mock interview sessions with the instructor.
  • Focus on ensuring participants have an email address and are able to research company websites, use online job search resources, have a professional looking resume, gain experience in completing online applications, submitting resumes electronically, and are comfortable with using this technology to continue their job search upon completion of the program.
