Admission Requirements Tuition and Fees Program Structure

 

Keyano College's Construction Management Certificate program teaches you critical skills for construction management. You'll gain the talent and experience that you'll need to meet the growing need for trained professionals to take on leadership roles in the construction industry.

We designed this program with input from industry and other subject matter experts, including the Construction Owners' Association of Alberta and the Canadian Construction Association. The program is approved by the Canadian Construction Association for Gold Seal Accreditation.

Program structure

Each course has been accredited as Special Industry Course credits for Gold Seal Certification candidates. The program has courses in a blended learning format where you'll spend some time in class and some hours learning on your own online.

You will access iLearn for course materials and online components. This increases the accessibility and flexibility of the program. You can buy any required textbooks at Keyano Bookstore.

Modules

The Basics of Project Management

In this 21-hour course, you'll gain an understanding of the five Project Management Process Groups:

  1. Initiating
  2. Planning
  3. Executing
  4. Monitoring and Controlling
  5. Closing

Learn how these processes interact to achieve project objectives successfully.

Discover how to integrate the ten Knowledge Area processes, tools and templates in the work place. Concepts include stakeholders, scope, quality, time, cost, human resources, communication, risk, and procurement and project integration management.

You'll also apply techniques such as stakeholder analysis, work breakdown structure, scheduling, estimating, risk assessments, contracts, and change control.

The Basics of Project Management qualifies for six Special Industry Course credits towards Gold Seal Certification.

Construction Planning & Scheduling

This 39-hour blended learning courses teaches you effective planning and scheduling methods. You'll gain a solid understanding of planning and scheduling tools and their applications. Learn how to ensure that the right resources and tools are available at the right time to enhance construction processes and services.

Construction Planning & Scheduling qualifies for six Special Industry Course credits towards Gold Seal Certification.

Project Controls

Project Controls is a 39-hour blended learning course and tackles managing budgets on larger projects if you're a Project Controls Team Member or Coordinator. The content explores the impact of cost management and project changes or delays on profitability through analyses of the Work Breakdown Structure. You also learn the role of finance and using manual and computer spreadsheet calculations.

Project Controls qualifies for six Special Industry Course credits towards Gold Seal Certification.

Principles of Contract Law

Principles of Contract Law is a 39-hour blended learning course. Learn the essentials of contract law and your responsibilities. The course will teach you how to manage, interpret and understand legal documents as a Construction Manager.

The course's content includes the legal system, construction contract law, interpreting documents, insurance, bonding, warranties and guarantees, contract terms and conditions, the litigation process, and implications of national, provincial and municipal codes, by-laws, acts and regulations

Managing Worksite Safety

Managing Worksite Safety is a 21-hour course where you'll learn how to create a safe work environment for your team.

The course will teach you safety concepts that are important to the construction industry, such as creating a safety culture, injury statistics and reporting, due diligence, legislation (Working Alone, Violence in the Workplace, Prime Contractor Responsibility, Incident Investigations, Drug and Alcohol), field-level risk assessments and safety management system overview.

Managing Worksite Safety qualifies for four Special Industry Course credits towards Gold Seal Certification.

Construction Drawing & Specifications

Construction Drawing & Specifications is a 39-hour blended learning course. This course examines plans, elevations, sections and specifications that apply to the construction process. You'll learn to read and understand specifications to cost out, plan work changes, and prevent delays. You'll gain hands-on experience with blueprint drawings and specifications.

Construction Drawing & Specifications qualifies for six Special Industry Course credits towards Gold Seal Certification.

Leading People

Leading People is a 21-hour course that will equip you with the skills you need to lead your team. Leaders need to be able to problem solve, manage time, collaborate, mentor and coach employees, communicate, organize and plan, manage performance, resolve conflicts and create a positive work environment. In this course, you will learn what it takes to be an effective leader.

Leading People qualifies for four Special Industry Course credits towards Gold Seal Certification.

Construction Capstone Project

Construction Capstone Project is a 21-hour blended learning module that combines all of the core subjects of the Construction Management Certificate Program. This cumulative, real-world construction project will include challenges faced by Construction Managers, Administrators and Coordinators.

You must have completed all of the program's courses and modules before starting the Construction Capstone Project.

Construction Capstone Project qualifies for four Special Industry Course credits towards Gold Seal Certification.
