Our Art and Design Certificate is a one-year program that will give you the skills necessary for your career in design and the visual arts. Classes take place in a world-class studio setting and focus on printmaking, drawing, and design fundamentals.

Skills learned upon completion can be applied to creative fields, such as:

  • Animation or concept art
  • Architecture
  • Art therapy
  • Graphic design
  • Illustration
  • Interior design
  • Teaching

Admission requirements

 High school diploma (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 60% in English 30-1 or permission of the Chair

No portfolio is required for admission into the program.

 Mature students
  • Minimum of 60% in English 30-1 or permission of the Chair

Mature students are 21 years or older on the first day of classes or have been out of school for at least three consecutive years.

 English Language Proficiency
  • TOEFL: iBT – minimum score of 79 with no score below 19
  • IELTS – minimum score of 6.0 
  • CAEL – minimum score of 60
  • MELAB – minimum score of 80

University transfers

Once you complete the Art and Design Certificate, you are eligible to transfer into the second year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Design degree at the Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts). All of the courses in our Art and Design program transfer to many degree programs across Canada.
