Keyano College welcomed Alberta’s Minister of Advanced Education Demetrios Nicolaides to Fort McMurray on Thursday, November 14, for his last stop of a province-wide tour of post-secondary institutions.

During his Keyano visit, the Minister got a first-hand view of the College’s modern facilities, including the Oilsands Power and Process Engineering Laboratory, and the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.

“It was a true pleasure to tour Keyano College last Thursday. It helped to give me a stronger perspective on what makes Keyano unique and how they are delivering high quality education to residents of Northeastern Alberta,” said Minister Nicolaides. “Its programs and strong industry partnerships are key to the economic vitality of Fort McMurray, neighbouring regions and the province of Alberta.”

The Minister engaged with staff, faculty, and students throughout the day. More than 550 people took part in a morning question and answer session in the Keyano Theatre and a facilitated sharing circle was held in the afternoon with students in the Recital Theatre.

“We were fortunate to have had the opportunity to host an open and honest dialogue with the Minister and provide him with an understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges that we face,” said Keyano College President and CEO Trent Keough. “Both the Minister and I appreciated the thoughtful questions posed throughout the sessions, as well as the level of engagement that was clearly evident during the proceedings.”
