Keyano College will reinstate its Early Learning Child Care Diploma program this fall.

Keyano College will reinstate its Early Learning Child Care (ELCC) Diploma program this fall.

The program was suspended in 2015 due to low enrolment, but had been identified as an ongoing need by community members and agencies, as the demand for trained child care administrators and supervisors remained high in the Region.

After consultations with stakeholders in the community, the delivery of the diploma program was completely restructured by College administrators and faculty, changes made with working child care employees in mind.

As a result, Year Two of the program will offer continuous intakes every seven weeks and will be delivered through evening, weekend, and online classes to provide flexibility for students who are already working. Courses will be delivered at the Clearwater Campus in a blended format that includes face-to-face (with possible web conferencing) engagement as well as a practicum component. There will also be full-time and part-time options available for students.

The first intake will be in September.

“We listened carefully, and from that Keyano College is responding to the community’s needs. As such, we are extremely excited to reoffer this program with a new delivery model that will provide a more flexible learning opportunity for students,” said Fred Russell, Vice President Academic.

Keyano College’s ELCC Diploma program is an excellent post-secondary opportunity, in particular for students who have previously obtained their ELCC Certificate. Year one of the Diploma program is the same as the ELCC Certificate program. After successful completion of year one, diploma students will be eligible for an ELCC Certificate in order to apply for Alberta Child Care Staff Certification as a Child Development Worker.

The one-year Certificate program prepares students for entry-level childcare worker position in our region.  The second year of the ELCC Diploma program teaches students the skills and knowledge required to advance their career into administrative and supervisory positions within their field.

Eligible students who do not hold an ELCC Certificate may enter Year 1 of the diploma program or can inquire at the Office of the Registrar about equivalencies and/or prior learning assessments for Year 2.
