Keyano College is doing its part in the fight against COVID-19 in the Wood Buffalo Region.  The College’s nursing department has ensured that staff and students are included in the  local effort.

Support has been offered to both the Northern Lights Health Centre and the Fort McMurray Fire Department, from sharing medical grade cleaning supplies to freeing up nursing faculty to take shifts at the hospital and encouraging volunteering.

Dr. Eli Ahlquist Dean, School of Health & Human Services said, “During this time, we all have to do our part and do what we can, we are fortunate to be in a position to be able to free up our nursing faculty so that they can work extra shifts at the hospital and help out at the COVID-19 clinics. At the beginning of the pandemic we reached out to the hospital and the Fire Department; we were able to donate some materials when supplies were short and we’ve developed a plan have supports in place if necessary.”

Dr. Ahlquist went on to say, “Our faculty have been amazing in their response, even our students have been stepping up and taking up various paid and volunteer opportunities. Seeing our collegaues and students getting involved makes the situation very real for us. We’re so proud of all of our students, both past and present and the role they’re playing at the front-line of this pandemic””

Keyano College is known for its Nursing programming, offering the Bachelor of Science Nursing program, Practical Nursing, Paramedicine, and Prehospital Care; many of the nurses and health care workers who work at the Northern Lights Health Centre and the COVID-19 clinics are graduates of the College.
