Hiring teams from three local school boards took advantage of an opportunity to talk to future teachers at the Keyano College Career Fair for Education Graduates on May 8.

Representatives of the Fort McMurray Catholic School Board, the Fort McMurray Public School Board, and Northland School Division No. 61 met with more than 20 graduates of Keyano College’s Elementary Generalist Degree program during the fair.

The morning began with a meet and greet session, followed by a series of mini-interviews which ran all afternoon. Organizers expected several job offers to be made and to date well over half of the graduating class has been offered a teaching contract. This is a testament to the great need for this teacher preparation program in our community.

The Bachelor of Education Program at Keyano College is a collaborative degree that is offered in conjunction with University of Alberta. Upon graduation students receive a Bachelor of Education Elementary Generalist degree from the University of Alberta which qualifies them to teach all grades through K-12.  This program has been serving the community for well over a decade. In 2016, Keyano College's Collaborative Education Degree program won the Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) Gold award for Program of Excellence Award.

According to Tracy Boger, Coordinator of the Education Program, "One unique thing about the program is that in years 3 and 4 most of the instruction is taught by University of Alberta professors. A great advantage of this is that students benefit from the knowledge of experts in their respective fields while at the same time also benefit from the advantages that small class sizes have to offer. Equally important, students can complete their studies without relocating and uprooting their lives."
