Huskies Athletics reveal new jerseys designed by a local Indigenous artist
In a spectacular display at centre court, the Keyano College Huskies revealed their new inspired jerseys designed by a Fort Chipewyan Indigenous artist.
Among the invited guests were Chief and Council from local First Nations and Métis groups, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Mayor and Council, MLA Tany Yao, MP Laila Goodridge, local business owners, Keyano Board of Governors, media, and many other community stakeholders.
“Keyano College is one of 67 college signatories across Canada committed to prioritizing Indigenous people access to post-secondary education to create and to promote learner success, inclusion, and community development”, explained Jay Notay, President & CEO. “We feel it is important to weave indigenous ways of knowing and learning into the fabric of the College and to continue to increase awareness and representation. Through the celebration of indigenous art and culture, we are encouraging a more inclusive and diverse campus.”
It was for that reason we reached out to the Wood Buffalo Region to find a local artist that would be interested in designing three different jerseys for the Keyano Huskies basketball, soccer, and volleyball teams.
Emma Voyageur, a 20-year-old Denésoliné Indigenous artist from Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation took on the challenge and delivered three stunning designs. Emma said, “There are many influences when it comes to my artwork including my culture, teachings, and past experiences as an indigenous woman.” Many of Emma's beliefs, values, and opinions are shown through different mediums and various styles. Her artwork reflects the stories and beauty of First Nations peoples in Alberta. Emma is currently studying at the Alberta University of the Arts in Calgary and plans to graduate in 2025 with her Bachelors of Fine Arts.
“We are so honoured to be adding these beautiful Indigenous works of art to our regular Huskies jersey rotation. These jerseys will instill a strong sense of pride in our Indigenous student-athletes as well as they will also strengthen the connection between our entire Athletics department to the strong Indigenous heritage in the Wood Buffalo Region. Today is truly a proud day to be a Keyano College Husky!” said Jonathan Lambert, Director of Athletics & Recreation.
