Syncrude Arts Alive Presents

Menopause The Musical

Category: Comedy Theatre

Date: Wednesday, October 11th

Time: 8:00pm

Tickets: $65

Venue: Keyano Theatre

Rating: Mature

The original Off-Broadway musical comedy is set in a department store where four women meet by chance while shopping for a black lace bra at a lingerie sale.  After noticing unmistakable similarities among one another, the all-female cast joke about their woeful hot flashes, mood swings, wrinkles, weight gain, and memory loss, too much sex, not enough sex and more. These women form a sisterhood and a unique bond with the audience as they rejoice in celebrating that Menopause is no longer “The Silent Passage” anymore!

Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, Menopause The Musical® was created as a celebration of women who find themselves at any stage of “The Change.”

The laugh out loud, 90 minute production, gets audiences out of their seats and singing along to brilliant parodies from 25 classic hit songs from the '60's, '70's and '80's.

Menopause The Musical®, now in its fourteenth year of production, is recognized as the longest- running scripted production in Las Vegas. The hilarious musical has been seen by over 11 million and entertained audiences across the world in more than 450 U.S. and Canadian cities, and in nearly 300 international cities in 15 countries.

Collaborations with a wide range of groups including the Winnipeg Singers, Moses Mayes and Ron Paley's Big Band have continued to fuel their pursuit of excellence and innovation.

The group has thrilled audiences throughout Canada, the US, Mexico, and Poland with their musicianship, humour, and sheer physical stamina. Fubuki Daiko’s repertoire is comprised mainly of original compositions. Hard driving percussive pieces alternate with gentle bamboo flute melodies. Precision choreography and spontaneous full body movement create a visual and aural spectacle that is part martial arts athleticism, part dance, and all rhythm.

An Evening with Steve Patterson

Category: Comedy

Date: Sunday, January 14th

Time:  8:00 pm

Tickets: $33

Venue: Keyano Theatre

Rating: Adult/18+

Every comic can tell a joke, but Steve Patterson is a triple threat of funny, combining skills as a stand-up comedian with over 15 years of touring experience, a successful radio and tv host and a published humour writer.

As host of CBC Radio One’s wildly successful “The Debaters” since 2007 Patterson has become a household name, with more than 700,000 weekly listeners. In 2010, steady accolades for his work on that show earned him a third invitation to perform on one of Just For Laughs’ prestigious televised galas, hosted by Steve Martin. Considered to be the highlight of the show by the audience and critics alike, Patterson’s performance prompted the legendary Martin himself to quip, “If I’d known he was going to be THAT good, I would have cancelled him.”

Patterson began his full-time comedy career in 1997, shortly after ending his full-time career as a copywriter when he wrote an ad for an amusement park that his boss found a little “too amusing.” Leaving his desk job behind, he opted for the national and international stage. In addition to playing every major city in Canada (and most of the minor ones) he has also headlined in Ireland, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates leaving audiences everywhere united in their praise

Tickets: Adults $35 Students/Seniors $25

Venue: Keyano Theatre

Rating: All ages

Rainbow Dance Theatre's newest production “SELFIE” presents an evening of non-stop surprises and stunning beauty when dance and technology collide onstage. The work features the popular social media phenomenon of "the selfie" as an integral part of the production both when audience members text their own selfies to the stage and as a point of departure for an exploration of the mystery of “self”.
Through high-powered dancing and the wizardry of motion tracking technology, audiences will be swept into an otherworldly artistic wonderland. The audience becomes a part of the show when they text their own selfie to the stage and see it appear during the performance. Then audience members journey with RDT through an exotic landscape – a sometimes gentle, sometimes explosive terrain – as “SELFIE” delves into the mystery of the “self”. Are we our outer perceived persona, our inner emotions, or our deep unconscious self? Or are we the selfie that we “share” with the world?

The Arrogant Worms

Category: Comedy

Date: Thursday, March 15th

Time: 8:00 pm

Tickets: $35

Venue: Keyano Theatre

Rating: Mature

The Arrogant Worms began as a comedy troupe performing songs and sketches on campus radio

The early feedback on the live shows was clear:  lose the sketches.  So the songs endured and they all remain because the band hates to throw anything out.

The songs were written to make fun of a big dumb world. Luckily, the world is still dumb and The Arrogant Worms (Mike McCormick, Chris Patterson and Trevor Strong) still have plenty to sing about. The show is fast, furious and family friendly.

The Arrogant Worms provide tuneful and silly escapism for everyone who needs it.  And if you think you don't need it, well you're wrong. You do!  The Arrogant Worms know what’s best for you and what’s best for you is The Arrogant Worms.

Union Duke

Category: Folk/Hillbilly Rock

Date: Thursday, April 5th

Time: 8:00 pm

Tickets: $23 General Admission

Venue: Keyano Recital Theatre

Rating: All ages

Sweat flies and floorboards tremble – Union Duke is a Toronto folk quintet with an explosive live show. Bridging soulful indie rock with bluegrass and country, the group belts out soaring harmonies with three, four and even five voices. The songs are irresistible, the perfect fit for the heatwave of the dance hall or the cool breeze of the park. These five guys have been making a commotion in one way or another since they were kids, and years of making music together have brought them to this: a heartbreak of twang and a bootshake of rock and roll. Union Duke is two fifths city, two fifths country, and one fifth whiskey.

For their third record, Golden Days, Union Duke recorded live off the floor to capture the raw, joyful energy of their concerts. Then they brought in Grammy award-winning mix engineer Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, Basia Bulat, Timbre Timber) to bring the mixes to life. Golden Days will take you back to your warmest memories: nights by the lake, passing a bottle around the fire, or singing with your friends at the top of your lungs. It also looks forward, reaching for those long, lazy summer days that will keep you going through the winter. It’s a record of pain and struggle, lessons learned – and of laughter between friends, tenderness between lovers. One minute you’re following banjo music rambling down a country lane. The next minute you feel the pulse and pound of the amplifiers.

The band works hard, travelling back and forth across the country playing to fans young and old from coast to coast. They’ve played sold out shows where crowds know all the words. They’ve performed at countless festivals including TURF, Mariposa, and Summerfolk, topping the list of must-see acts. Their enthusiasm is infectious, and they leave every audience smiling – maybe the golden days aren’t so distant after all!
