Keyano Huskies heading to 2017-2018 ACAC Women's Basketball Championships

For the third time in the last four years, the Keyano Huskies women’s basketball team has qualified for Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) post-season play.

Eight teams with an offence-with-a-muscle  and a defense-with-a-hustle are ready for the 2017-2018 ACAC Women's Basketball Championships to be held March 1-3, 2018 at SAIT Campus Centre Gym in Calgary.

Returning from last year's championships are seven teams;  the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder, Keyano College Huskies, Lakeland College Rustlers, Medicine Hat Colleges Rattlers, NAIT Ooks,  SAIT Trojans and St. Mary’s University Lightning.

Not returning to the hardwood are the 2016-2017 ACAC and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) champion Lethbridge College Kodiaks, and in their place the Olds College Broncos are returning after a two -year absence.

Ranked No. 1 in the ACAC North, the Keyano Huskies will open the three-day, eight-team tournament against the St. Mary’s University Lightning.

 

 “Staying relaxed and keeping engaged, that is the key,” said Huskies’ coach Dwayne Vigilance, now into his sixth year at the Fort McMurray campus. “We have to stay in the moment and do what we do well. Run the floor, rebound and a half-court defense. Keeping it simple.

“It is great that we have a balanced team and you can’t focus on just one player. That’s what makes us a tough team in that we have more than one weapon.”

Huskies are ranked No. 4 in recent CCAA women’s basketball polls.

Keyano Huskies claim silver at 2017-2018 ACAC Men's Volleyball Championships

Keyano College Huskies men's volleyball earned the silver medal at the 2017-2018 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Men's Volleyball Championships which concluded tonight with the SAIT Trojans winning 25-20, 25-24, 27-25 in Medicine Hat.

 

Huskies claimed ACAC bronze in 2012-2013 and 2016-2017 and silver in 2015-2016.

 

Huskies are now off - as ACAC Wildcard team - to the 2017-2018 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men's National Volleyball Championships to be held Mar. 7-10, 2018 in Victoria B.C. and hosted by Camosun College.

Keyano Huskies first game at the 2017-2018 ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championships will be tonight at 8 p.m. vs. the host Medicine Hat Rattlers.

 

Keegan Kuhr, head coach of the Keyano Huskies, says his team, "Is healthy and have been practicing and look good going in."

 

He added: "Offensively we can sometime dominate with the block and we are a fairly good serving team as well."

 

With five graduating student/athletes, including 6-foot-4 right side Blazej Pellowski, who is No. 1 in ACAC career history for kills at 1,108 and No. 2 in ACAC career history in service aces at 161, Kuhr says experience is also a factor.
