Keyano College Huskies
For the seventh time in the last eight years, the Keyano Huskies men’s basketball team has qualified for Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) post-season play
Eight fast-breaking, rim-shaking teams are ready for the 2017-2018 ACAC Men's Basketball Championships to be held March 1-3, 2018 at Lethbridge College Kodiaks’ Val Matteotti Gymnasium.
Returning from last year's championships are seven teams; the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder, Lakeland College Rustlers, Lethbridge College Kodiaks, Medicine Hat Colleges Rattlers, NAIT Ooks, Red Deer College Kings and SAIT Trojans.
Not returning to the hardwood are the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings and in their place the Keyano College Huskies are returning after a one-year hiatus.
Keyano will play the SAIT Trojans in their opening match.
“We are the underdogs heading in,” said Huskies head coach Jeremy Wielenga. “SAIT is a Top 15 team in the country and they are athletic and they will look to push the ball. They have a veteran player in Murphy Beya (15.8 points per game 10.6 rebounds per game) who is the heart and soul of the team. We will look at a way to stop him or contain him.
“Bringing in a lot of new guys this year (only two returnees in Jonathas Michel and Jack Redden) and being a first-year head coach, a lot of people did not think we would be in the situation we are now in...making the playoffs.
“Our strength is that we have different guys that can step up at any time. Our balance is going to be our strength.”
Keyano has won an ACAC Men’s Basketball silver in 2012-2013 and bronze in 2015-2016.
