Keyano Huskies heading to 2017-2018 ACAC Women's Basketball Championships

For Immediate Release

Monday February 26, 2018

Keyano College Huskies

For the third time in the last four years, the Keyano Huskies women’s basketball team has qualified for Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) post-season play.

Eight teams with an offence-with-a-muscle  and a defense-with-a-hustle are ready for the 2017-2018 ACAC Women's Basketball Championships to be held March 1-3, 2018 at SAIT Campus Centre Gym in Calgary.

Returning from last year's championships are seven teams;  the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder, Keyano College Huskies, Lakeland College Rustlers, Medicine Hat Colleges Rattlers, NAIT Ooks,  SAIT Trojans and St. Mary’s University Lightning.

Not returning to the hardwood are the 2016-2017 ACAC and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) champion Lethbridge College Kodiaks, and in their place the Olds College Broncos are returning after a two -year absence.

Ranked No. 1 in the ACAC North, the Keyano Huskies will open the three-day, eight-team tournament against the St. Mary’s University Lightning.

“Staying relaxed and keeping engaged, that is the key,” said Huskies’ coach Dwayne Vigilance, now into his sixth year at the Fort McMurray campus. “We have to stay in the moment and do what we do well. Run the floor, rebound and a half-court defense. Keeping it simple.

“It is great that we have a balanced team and you can’t focus on just one player. That’s what makes us a tough team in that we have more than one weapon.”

Huskies are ranked No. 4 in recent CCAA women’s basketball polls.
