Last October the Keyano Huskies became only the third Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) school to win three-or-more consecutive ACAC Men's Soccer Championships when they defeated the NAIT Ooks 1-0 at Sherwood Park's Emerald Hills Sports Pavilion.

The previous year the upstart Huskies had kicked their way to their first ACAC medal with 2014-2015 silver.

During the last four seasons they have showcased their skills with a regular season record of 34 wins 4 ties and 2 losses with 135 goals for and  24 goals against.

Kicking off the 2018-2019 ACAC regular season against the visiting NAIT Ooks this Saturday at Shells Place’s SMS Equipment Stadium, the outlook is a bit different.

“We are basically starting from scratch as this is a transition year for program,” said Huskies first-year coach Macky Singh, who takes over coaching duties for both the men’s and women’s futsal/soccer programs after guiding the Olds College Broncos men’s and women’s futsal and soccer squads in ACAC action the last four years.

“With a lot of players graduating (including Rodrigo Wogel-Koebsch, three-time ACAC North All Conference, Pedro Bianchi two-time ACAC North All-Conference and one time Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association All Canadian) or moving on, we are in a rebuilding phase for the program. It is a different situation from the last four years.

“We are starting fresh for the program. There is no pressure to return (to medal status) right away and everybody knew that it would be a transition year.”

Keyano College Huskies men’s and women’s soccer, kicked off the 2018-2019 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) preseason with a special exhibition game against the Red Deer Kings/Queens this  past Saturday August 25, 2018 at Rocky Mountain House’s Curtis Field.

The match was the inaugural Chambers Memorial College Game in memory of Huskies soccer /futsal players Zara and Bridget Chambers who died in a car accident December 16, 2017.

The Huskies men tied the Kings 2-2 while the women lost to the Queens 3-0.

“It was important to recognize Zara and Bridget’s involvement with the Huskies and Rocky Mountain community as well and to continue their legacy,” said Huskies head coach Macky Singh, of the event organized by Rocky Knights Soccer in partnership with Alberta Soccer, Keyano College Athletics and Red Deer College Athletics.

“The game also shows that there is an opportunity for females from small communities (Zara and Bridget are from Rocky Mountain House) to dream and continue to play soccer at the next level and get a great education as well.”

The Chambers Memorial College Game was  just one of three matches that the Huskies played this weekend as Red Deer College was hosting a pre-season tournament at Edgar Athletic Park.

Huskies men tied Ambrose University Lions  2-2 and Lethbridge Kodiaks 0-0.

Huskies women defeated the Kodiaks 3-0 and lost to SAIT Trojans 1-0.

“It was an opportunity to see where we are at and the level we are at,” said Singh. “It was a great gauge.”

Huskies open the 2018-2019 ACAC regular season September  8-9, 2018 when they host the NAIT Ooks.
