Canada pleases its home crowd at the U21 Pan Am Cup

FORT MCMURRAY, ALBERTA (May 16, 2017):  Canada won its opener at the U21 Pan American Cup at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre at Keyano College in Fort McMurray on Monday night.

Canada worked out the pressure of playing at home to beat Guatemala. The final score was 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-15).

Canada’s top scorers were Matthew Passalent of Hamilton, Ontario, and Eric Loeppky of Steinbach, Manitoba, who each contributed 15 points. Passalent’s serve was impressive with three aces.

"At the beginning we could see that our guys were tight and nervous. They didn’t know what to expect," said Canada’s U21 head coach, Gino Brousseau. "Also it’s hard to play a team that is unpredictable and not as tall as our team. They take risks. But I am satisfied – we broke the ice and we will get better with each match."

Canada’s Daenan Gyimah of Scarborough, who also plays for UCLA, finished off the night with an ace for match point in front of an appreciative home crowd.
Guatemala’s team put on a good effort against the bigger Canadians. Opposite Erik Flores led his team on the scoreboard with seven points.

“We knew Team Canada will be a more experienced and solid team than us. It’s just the first game, so I think we will get better during the week. We came here to improve and facing solid teams like Canada will help us,” said Guatemala’s coach, Reider Lucas.

It was a sweep for Cuba, Brazil and Canada today at the Pan Am Cup, with all three of these teams winning their matches 3-0.

Women's Basketball ID camp

2017-2018 ID Camp

This was the 4th annual Keyano Huskies Women’s basketball camp. The camp was a success despite the winter storm, which forced seven campers to remain at home.  In the end we had 18 women participate in the identification camp. They came from across Canada; from Saskatoon, Edmonton and area, and as far away as Newfoundland. For two days the potential Huskies were put through a vast array of testing, skills and drills that pushed them to new limits.  Upon completion of the weekend we are proud to say that we have signed four of them to officially join the 2017-18 Huskies basketball team. We have also signed on a new international player who is coming to us from Australia.  The following is a brief bio on the new players for the 2017-18 Huskies season.

Fort McMurray, AB – April 6, 2016 – Keyano College is excited to host the U21 Men’s Volleyball Pan American Cup, from May 16 to 21. This international tournament is expected to see the top junior teams from Canada, Cuba, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Chile, Brazil and Peru. Hosting in Fort McMurray will give Team Canada the home-court advantage in its attempt to qualify for the prestigious World Championship event.

Tickets are now on sale. Don’t miss the opportunity to for early-bird pricing by purchasing your tickets before April 21. Full pricing and online purchasing is available here:

Teams and groups of 10 or more are eligible for special rates. Tickets can also be purchased at the Keyano College box office.

The top two teams from this tournament will qualify for the FIVB U21 World Championship in Czech Republic in June.

"This is a great opportunity for our community to play host to an international sporting event and highlight the best of our region," said Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Mayor Melissa Blake. "We look forward to welcoming athletes and coaches from across the Americas and hope you enjoy your stay with us."

The round robin portion of the tournament will run May 16 to 18, and the playoffs will be held May 19 to 21 at Keyano College, Fort McMurray.

"We are pleased to welcome Volleyball Canada and the other nations to Fort McMurray this May,” said Shane Boersma, Chair of the Board for Fort McMurray Tourism. “We are proud to let the sport world know that Fort McMurray is open for business and showcase all that the Wood Buffalo region has to offer for sport events, sport-related meetings and training camps.”

"This is a very important tournament for several reasons. Not only will this event provide a ticket to the Worlds for two teams – with Canada in the mix – but also this is the first international sporting event held in Fort McMurray since the devastating fire last year," explained Alan Ahac, Volleyball Canada Director of International Events. "Having a major event will certainly contribute to the re-building process and we’re looking forward to hosting our teams from across the Americas to showcase this region of Alberta."

Volleyball Canada - the governing body of the sport in Canada - donated $10,000 to Red Cross fire relief last year when it held one of its National events in Edmonton.

"Now we’re very pleased to continue to support the area by showcasing the next generation of athletes in an action-packed format in Fort Mac," said Ahac. "We are also excited to be working with the local organizing committee, volleyball community and volunteers to make this event at success."
The event will be webcast on CBC Sports
