Adaptive Technology

Adaptive technology promotes greater effectiveness for persons with functional limitations or disabilities by enabling them to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing. Adaptive technology provides changed methods of interacting with or enhancements to the technology.

Once it has be determined that a student requires adaptive technology, due to their specific disabilities, they will undergo an assessment done by the Adaptive Technology Specialist (ATS). From there it is determined which software/hardware will be introduced to the student. It may be necessary to trial more than one piece of technology before making a final decision. After the assessment is completed, recommendations for specific equipment will be made. The Adaptive Technology Specialist will train the student with their specified software/hardware. Other services provided by the ATS include set-up and installation, technical support, and alternate format*.

*Alternate format refers to changing the original format of the text. This could include conversion from a regular textbook to different format such as: electronic, audio, Braille, enlarged print, etc.

There are a variety of technologies available that can help a student with the different activities that he/she may encounter in a learning environment.  There are technologies available to help with:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Magnification
  • Diagrams
  • Organizing ideas
  • Note Taking
  • Highlighting & Visual Tracking
  • Mind Maps & Outlines
  • Spelling & Grammar
  • Adjustable copy holders & furniture
Adaptive technologies fall in to the following general categories:

  • Text to Speech Software (e.g., Kurzweil, Wynn, Read & Write Gold)
  • Voice Recognition Software (e.g., Dragon Naturally Speaking, MacSpeech Dictate)
  • Screen Magnification Software (e.g., Zoomtext)
  • Screen Reading Software (e.g., JAWS, WindowEyes)
  • Alternative Keyboards
  • AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) Devices
  • Hearing/Vision Devices
  • Other specialized equipment

Adaptive Technology is an area constantly changing and growing. Research of existing and new products is done on a regular basis.

Adaptive Technology will only benefit the learner if he/she understands how to use the technology.  The Adaptive Technology team will assist you with your training and make sure that you are comfortable with the technology.  Resources are always available through the Adaptive Technology Office.
