At Keyano College, you'll be able to put your knowledge to work through a Co-operative Education Program that includes a paid work practicum and in two years you'll receive both your 4th Class and 3rd Class Power Engineering certifications.
Power Engineering has five levels: 5th Class, 4th Class, 3rd Class, 2nd Class and 1st Class. Each level requires a combination of qualifying time and examinations administered by the Alberta Boilers Safety Association.
Power engineers may be responsible for industrial equipment such as boilers, steam and gas turbines, generators, gas and diesel internal combustion engines, pumps, condensers, compressors, pressure vessels and related controls. In large industrial or building complexes, they also may be responsible for heating, air-conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration, fire systems and building control systems. A complete occupational profile can be found at the Alberta Learning Information Service (ALIS).
Keyano College's two year Power Engineering Co-op Program addresses the critical shortage of power engineers in Northern Alberta. Through a progression of classroom instruction linked directly to the workplace, students gain real-time, paid work experience as they earn 4th and 3rd Class certification as power engineers.
Local and regional industry partners have supported the program since 1996. Current partners make up a steering committee which participates in student selection, work practicum mentorship and evaluation, and program assessment. These employers gain access to a trained and skilled pool of qualified 4th and 3rd class power engineers while students gain tremendous opportunities to showcase their technical and employability skills to potential employers. Students see the paid work practicums as a viable and affordable means to achieve long term, well paid, progressive employment.
