Diploma

The College Preparation Program is tailored to meet the needs of adults who wish to upgrade their academic education to a level that will allow them to enter apprenticeship, technical, career or university programs or to gain employment entry skills. The Program consists of selected subjects and skill development at the Grade 10, 11 and 12 equivalency levels. The length of time required to complete the Program will depend on your background, motivation and goals.

Matriculation - University Studies

Students who meet requirements can enrol in a combined College Preparation - University Studies Program. This allows students to upgrade some courses while studying at the university level.

Students wishing to enter any of the above programs should meet with an advisor to clarify their educational goals and determine appropriate level of entry.

Other Combined Programs

Students with the necessary prerequisites may enrol courses from a variety of career programs while completing or upgrading some other high school equivalency courses.

Introduction to College Preparation Math: There are two streams of mathematics in the College Preparation program. Students are strongly advised to write a placement test in math with the Office of the Registrar before choosing an appropriate math course since math skills often need to be refreshed and updated if they have not been practised frequently. Placement tests can help identify weaknesses and strengths in a student’s math abilities.

Counselling can also provide students with the latest information on math requirements for entry into career, technical, and university programming. It is important that learners know which math prerequisite they may need to enter a future career path, so that the College Preparation Math program can adequately prepare them for their choices.

The Math 013-023-033 stream is designed to build solid math skills beginning with students who may have had past difficulties in math. This sequence enables the student to gradually gain confidence and strength and move ultimately to Math 033, which is the requirement for a general high school equivalency diploma.

Math 033 is a basic requirement for students wishing to enter most trades and technology programs, as well as Business Administration and Computer Information Systems diploma programs.

The Pure Math 010-020-030-031 stream is designed to accommodate students entering the College Preparation program with solid math ability and move them through the core of material required for an advanced high school equivalency certificate. It is assumed these students have the technical math skills and problem-solving skills to handle this more rigorous material with comfort.

Entrance Requirements

Students wishing to enter the program should meet with a counsellor in order to clarify their educational and vocational goals.

Admission to the program requires successful completion of the Academic Foundations Certificate program with a minimum grade of C- in both Academic Foundations Language Arts 009 and Academic Foundations Math 009, or a program of studies equivalent to an Alberta Grade 9, or mature student status. A mature student meets one of the following criteria with our without a completed high school diploma:

  • has been out of school for at least three consecutive years.
  • is at least 21 years of age.

All applicants may be required to write placement assessments to determine their entry level, in the subject(s) of study selected.
