ACAC Futsal Championship GOLD for Keyano Huskies men

For immediate release

After a one-year gold medal hiatus, the Huskies maouvered their way to their fifth ACAC Men’s Futsal banner in the last six years, with an penalty shootout 3-2 score against the Olds College Broncos.

Tied 1-1 after regulation, Gabriel Koebsch scored at 2:45 of double overtime to send the game to penalty kicks.

Gabriel’s older brother Rodrigo Wogel Koebsch scored the only goal in penalty kick sessions for the win.

“It’s 50 minutes and the game can go much longer with stoppage time and possible overtime, so we had to pace ourselves,” said Huskies head coach Murad Sukru, of the Huskies five-man side, which was playing with no substitutions as Joseph Lambele had hurt his leg in the semi-final 6-5 decision against defending champ Medicine Hat Rattlers earlier in the day. Teammate Pedro Bianchi had received a red card in the same match.

Huskies goalie Cruz Coronel  made all three penalty kicks, the last one, “knocking the wind out of him,“ said Sukru.

“Cruz was a left back transitioning into a goal keeper and I could not be more proud of how he stepped up for the team and stepped up for the program and won tournament MVP.  That last shot knocked the wind out of him and I went over to him (when Coronel was prone on the floor) and he looked up and told me that he did not know if he could face one more shot. He did not realize that the game was over. He did not know where he was for a second.”

Huskies beat Kodiaks 9-1,  Rustlers 10-2., Lions  7-2 and defending champ Rattlers 6-5 in the semi-final.

In a Facebook post Sukru added: “Men's side have gone down in history playing with 6 players and only 4 in the finals to win ACAC futsal championship over the weekend is unheard of and using our left back as our keeper to win MVP of the tournament is incredible.  I would like to thank and congratulate Rodrigo Wogel and Pedro Bianchi for there tremendous contribution to Keyano! Putting in five years of hard work on and off the pitch! Great role models in the class room and on the pitch. True legends!! I would also like to thank my amazing coaching staff, Angél Jai Jai Goldson, Jules Ohelo, Jane Barter.”

Broncos also went undefeated in prior contests: Olds 2 Rattlers 0, Olds 6 Vikings 2,  Olds 3 Eagles 2 and Olds 5 Lakeland 2.

Olds last ever medal in men’s futsal was in 2011-2012 in the bronze medal match 3-2 to the Huskies.

“I think it is pretty huge for the college and program to be where we are,” said Broncos head coach Macky Singh. “We stepped away from futsal for a while (2015-2016) and this year we went all the way to the finals.

“It shows good development for not only our futsal program this year but soccer as well.”

Rattlers beat  Lakeland 5-2 to claim bronze medal status.

With the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) men’s volleyball champion SAIT Trojans out of the medal hunt at the 2017-2018 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Volleyball Championships, the pressure was now on ACAC Wildcard Keyano College Huskies.

History will show that during the last 39 years, an ACAC team has medaled at the men’s volleyball national showcase every year accept 2015, 1988 and 1983.

We can now make that 40 years as the Huskies came back in the bronze medal match Saturday evening to beat the host Camosun Chargers 25-16, 22-25, 11-25, 28-26 and 15-13 at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence in Victoria, British Columbia.

“It is something that we can be very proud of,” said Huskies coach Keegan Kuhr, of the bronze medal, which is only the third ever CCAA medal for the Fort McMurray-based school, the Huskies capturing silver at the 2015-2016 CCAA Men's Soccer Championships while Lisa Collins earned a bronze in CCAA women's cross country in 2003-2004.

Justin Delorme had 25 kills in victory. Teammate Radoslaw Brzozowski added 10 kills and a service ace.

Both players were named to the All Tournament team with Delorme making First All Star and Brzozowski Second All Star status.

Setter Kelly Woods was named Huskies Player of the Game with 25 assists, three kills and four blocks

“Delorme was an animal and to have 50 kills in one day...with that sort of volume for him to play that way, was something special,” said Kuhr of the 4th year 6-foot-6 student/athlete (Business Admin) from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

“Everyone stepped up an had big games and for the guys leaving the program after their fifth year or guys graduating from their programs, they get to leave with a national medal.”
