GAME 9: Keyano Huskies 2, Durham Lords 1

The Keyano Huskies will play for Bronze at the 2017 CCAA Men’s Soccer National Championship after a 2-1 victory over the Durham Lords Friday in Nanaimo.

The Huskies got on the board in the opening twenty minutes, after Ayman Hassen was taken down in the box. Harris Bajric calmly chipped the penalty kick into the middle of the net as Durham’s Trevor Stephens dove to the right corner.

Both keepers were focal points for long stretches of the game, as they traded key saves. Stephens and his defensive lineup cleared a multitude of chances away from the Huskies, while Josue Vargas turned away Durham’s efforts when tested.

The drama escalated further in the final moments when the Lords evened the game up in the 89th minute off a header from Kevin Thibodeau. The game looked destined for penalties, but the Huskies had other ideas. Carlos Gunner Kavidjima scored the game winner in stoppage time after racing past the Lords’ defense and beating Stephens who was sliding out to intercept the ball.

Tomorrow we go back at it again. We worked hard today, we defended, we attacked, we played our game, we never changed ourselves,“  said Huskies head coach Murad Sukru, in a postgame Locker- room talk to the team. “Towards the end we got a little bit too aggressive and had some unnecessary fouls.”

Assistant coach Angel Goldson added: “At some point in time out there, it looked like we were losing our way and we were slowing it down before speeding it back up again. They were were coming in hard on us and then we figured it out and started getting the ball on foot again. ”

The Huskies and Hurricanes had met twice in previous CCAA regular round action with the Huskies winning 3-1 and 5-2 in 2015 and 2014 respectively.

Keyano Huskies ACAC Men's Soccer Championship story

Courtesy ACAC

by ACAC Sports Writer Curtis J. Phillips

Keyano Huskies become only the third Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) school, since 1983-1984, to win three or more consecutive ACAC Men's Soccer Championships as they defeated the NAIT Ooks 1-0 at Sherwood Park's Emerald Hills Sports Pavilion yesterday.

(The Mount Royal Cougars claimed eight consecutive banners from 1990-1998 while Ooks had a run of three titles 1987-1990)

Scoring the winning goal for the Huskies was Fort McMurray's very own Joseph Lambele (No. 17  file photo courtesy of Erwin Kuhr).

“Joseph (Lambele) is a very special player and he is just getting into his peak,” said Keyano Huskies’ head coach Murad Sukru, of the 18 year-old rookie. “He will do a lot of damage at nationals.”

Lambele, a graduate of Holy Trinity High School, scored at the 6:30 mark after taking a pass from teammate Haris Bajric that deflected off an Ooks’ defender, dribbling past two defenders before placing the ball low to right hand side to find the mesh.

Huskies’ Jonathan Breggeling recorded  his second straight shutout.

“We had lots of (shots on NAIT  goal) and we should have capitalized on them and put the game away early,” said Sukru. “I talked to them (Huskies players) about how to play soccer and they have grasped it.”

Huskies opened the tournament with a bye, advancing to the gold medal game following a semi-final 4-0 shutout of the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder.

Scoring for the Huskies were Bajric, Lambele, Pedro Bianchi and Rodrigo Wogel Koebsch.

Lambele, who moved to Fort McMurray at the age of 13 from South Africa, said he is proud to wear Huskies’ colours.

“Graduating (from Holy Trinity High School) I thought that this would be the best program for me and the best opportunity,” said  Lambele, who had two regular season goals in 10 appearances. “My mindset in the postseason was completely changed. At
