Posted On Tuesday April 02, 2024

Keyano College proudly announces the revival of its Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) program after a five-year hiatus, made possible through a partnership with SMS Equipment, a leading global equipment distributor. This exciting return is accompanied by SMS Equipment's generous provision of rental support for two pieces of Komatsu equipment essential for the hands-on training component of the program.

The financial arrangement sees Keyano College contributing $15,000 towards the rental cost, with SMS Equipment providing a Gift-In-Kind valued at $35,000 to cover the remaining balance. This partnership marks a significant milestone in Keyano College's commitment to providing quality education and meeting industry demands, while SMS Equipment's support underscores their dedication to education and industry advancement, facilitating a significant cost-saving for the College, which we passed on to our students.

The Heavy Equipment Operator program at Keyano College is an intensive 8-week course designed to equip students with the skills needed for entry-level positions in this field. Students, trained by qualified and experienced instructors, gain essential knowledge in heavy equipment operation and safety through computer-based training modules, simulators, and hands-on field training. “We are immensely grateful to SMS Equipment for their support," said Tony Gauthier, Chair of the HEO Program at Keyano College. "Their contribution has significantly enhanced the learning experience and made tuition more affordable. It provides students access to premium equipment and practical training opportunities at a lower cost."

SMS Equipment is dedicated to serving the construction, forestry, and mining industries. Their commitment to supporting education and workforce development is evident through their partnership with Keyano College. The company recognizes its responsibility to positively contribute to enhancing the quality of life within the diverse communities in which it operates. This dedication is demonstrated through initiatives such as supporting programs like the Heavy Equipment Operator program at Keyano College.

This partnership between Keyano College and SMS Equipment exemplifies collaborative efforts to address workforce needs and foster the development of skilled professionals in the heavy equipment operation sector.
