Build your Career through volunteerism!

Did you know that almost 12 million Canadians volunteer every year? Volunteers have the opportunity to do an amazingly wide range of activities, from specific, short-term tasks such as a one day community cleanup project, to career enhancing work or training, like teaching first aid to a group at no charge.

These volunteer experiences can be used and are just as valuable on a resume as job experience, often more so. To an employer, a volunteer (someone who gives of themselves with no expectation of monetary or material compensation) shows initiative, commitment, perseverance, forward thinking, and an interest in community and personal growth. Volunteering makes you a better prospective employee.

Volunteering can also provide experiences you might not otherwise have access to in areas outside of your chosen vocation, for organizations with which you may not have had any previous contact. This widens your overall experience base, creating a well rounded resume that shows flexibility and adaptability with a wider skill set. Volunteering also enhances your resume through valuable work experience within your field, leading to career advancement or the possibility of future employment through your volunteer experience.

Opportunities are open to everyone as volunteers come for all walks of life, age groups, cultures, abilities and backgrounds.

If you're interested in pursuing an opportunity in volunteering, the following is a small list of organizations in need of volunteers: Aurora Youth Choir, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Club, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Mental Health, Food Bank, Girl Guides, Habitat for Humanity, Heritage Park, Keyano Theatre, Leadership Wood Buffalo, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Northern Lights Health Foundation, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Salvation Army, Some Other Solutions, Victim Services Unit, and Write Break Literacy.

If you would like more information about opportunities with any of these organizations or others, please contact Volunteer Wood Buffalo at 780-791-9333 or through email at volunteerwoodbuffalo@telus.net.
